Ghana election: Tensions mount as Nana Akufo-Addo confidently boasts of impending victory

Ghana’s opposition candidate Nana Akufo-Addo confidently boasted of impending victory as tensions mount in the country over delays in releasing the results of a nail-biting presidential election tainted by violence. The high-stakes race between incumbent John Mahama and rival Akufo-Addo is seen as a litmus test of stability for one of Africa’s most secure democracies. Speaking to a rowdy crowd of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters gathered at his private residence, Akufo-Addo said he was “confident” he’d defeated Mahama despite the electoral agency not yet releasing the official results. “We the NPP are quietly confident that we have won a famous and historic victory,” Akufo-Addo said, calling for his supporters to be patient and peaceful. “It’s going to be an anxious time, I know, until the results are formally declared.” In its latest update, the electoral agency said that they had received preliminary results from 90 of out 275 constituencies, but only published the results for 25 of them.
“Please be patient,” electoral commission head Charlotte Osei said at a press conference. “Accuracy is more important than speed.” Following “possible instances of over-voting” the commission had previously said that the tallies would be subject to extra verification. But after doing their own calculations of the publically posted constituency results, local media organisations reported that Akufo-Addo has taken the lead over Mahama. PeaceFM says that Akufo-Addo is in the lead with 53.96 percent of the vote calculated from just over half of the 275 constituencies. CitiFM also puts Akufo-Addo in the lead with 52.70 percent of the vote calculated from 104 constituencies. In the early afternoon, NPP supporters armed with golf clubs were already gathering outside Akufo-Addo’s house, preparing for a face-off. “We have won the election,” said 33-year-old Bismark Agyei. “They need to announce that.” – NPP ‘propaganda’ – Internal polling results released by Akufo-Addo’s team heaped additional pressure on the commission. After analysing “pink sheets” — carbon copies of the voter tallies at individual stations — the NPP reported that Akufo-Addo is winning with a lead of over one million votes. NPP spokeswoman Oboshie Sai Cofie said it was clear the party had won. “As more and more of the results come in, we’ll reach a point of no return,” Cofie said. NDC deputy general secretary Koku Anyidohu dismissed the NPP claim as “propaganda”, adding that releasing the internal results was “illegal” and designed to “hoodwink” the press. “We’re all allowed to do our pie charts and bar graphs, but they are playing you. Still, electoral observers are urging the commission to “speed up the process of announcing results”, said Christopher Fomunyoh, regional director for the US-based National Democratic Institute. “Then it assures people that the process is working as planned,” Fomunyoh said. – Be ‘vigilant’ – Akufo-Addo had told his supporters that “vigilance is key” at the polls in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the 2012 vote — narrowly won by Mahama with 50.7 percent — that he contested unsuccessfully in the country’s Supreme Court. “We wish to state emphatically that the NPP will not allow any person, persons or entity to subvert the will of the Ghanaian people and that all necessary steps will be taken to protect the vote,” party campaign chairman Peter Mac Manu said in a statement just after midnight. After voting on Wednesday, Mahama voiced confidence the election would “consolidate that democracy further”. There are seven candidates battling for the top job — including former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings — and if the smaller parties perform well and deny either frontrunner a majority, a run-off vote will be held later this month. Charismatic Mahama, 58, is running for a second term. The leader of the ruling New Democratic Congress (NDC) party has urged voters to “stay the course”, promising to deliver more infrastructure projects. Akufo-Addo, 72, is making his third and likely final bid for the highest office. He has blasted Ghana’s poor economic growth estimated at 3.3 percent in 2016 — the slowest rate in two decades — and outlined how to get the economy back on track. Akufo-Addo, who said previously that he would accept the results even if he loses, added recently: “Those are hurdles we have to jump once we get there”.

Kang'ethe said they all bars and other outlets would be inspected to ensure only good quality alcohol is sold.
"The government cannot control the sale of illicit brews without information. We urge the public to share information that may help us fight the menace," he added.

President Zuma faces impeachment

next week with his presidency mired in crisis, after investigators documented allegations of government corruption. Thousands of people took to the streets to demand that he should resign from office.
The vote was called by the main opposition, following a report by the country’s anti-corruption watchdog calling for a judicial inquiry into allegations of influence-peddling in the ANC Government. The report was finally released after the president withdrew a court bid to delay its publication in the face of mass public protests. Police used stun grenades and water cannon to disperse protesters in Pretoria carrying “Zuma must go’’ placards. Mmusi Maimane, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), told a news briefing in Cape Town that the no-confidence debate and vote was scheduled for Nov. 10. “This motion should not be viewed as a partisan motion – we do not see it as a DA motion. “I know there are ANC MPs and cabinet ministers who have had enough. They have an opportunity to actually do something about their anger by Nov. 10,’’ he said. Zuma has survived his two previous no-confidence votes this year, largely backed by the support of his ANC (African National Congress) which controls about two-thirds of the Assembly. A senior party official told Reuters that ANC lawmakers were unlikely to break ranks and support the motion this time round. However, there have been widening fissures in the ruling party this year. There is growing discontent with the scandals that have plagued Zuma’s presidency and played a role in the ANC suffering its worst electoral losses since the end of apartheid in municipal polls in August.

Graphic photos: Three female terrorists killed in foiled attack at Mombasa Central police station, Kenya

Three female terrorists clad in hijabs stormed Mombasa’s Central Police Station on Sunday morning, September 11th and launched a physical attack on the officers using knives.

Mombasa County Commander Peterson Maelo said the three women, who walked into the station pretending to report a stolen phone, brandished knives after they were barred from accessing the cells with one throwing a petrol bomb in an attempt to burn down the station.

Maelo said one of them stabbed the officer manning the report desk forcing his colleagues to shoot them. Two died instantly while one was shot as she attempted to escape.
This sparked a police operation with officers from paramilitary General Service Unit being deployed at the station. Gun shots and an explosion were also heard in the premises, located at the center of the city, which was immediately cordoned off.

Two police officers were rushed to hospital with injuries following the attack. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the attackers were attempting to free some prisoners held at the police station. Maelo, however, said the motive of the attack was not yet known and investigations were underway.
Pictures showed police officers on window of the first floor of the station while jumping off from the fire that had been started. Top politicians led by Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho visited the scene and complimented police for their swift action.
"It is unfortunate that we wake up to this incident, especially on a day when Hajj is being conducted. It is a dark day in Mombasa,”"said Joho who termed the incident a ‘heinous crime’. I urge the security agencies to publish the names and pictures of the attackers so that we investigate their background and help curb such incidents in the future,"  said Joho.
He urged the residents to stay calm as security agencies were on high alert on all public places.

County Commissioner Evans Achoki noted that there was a likely change of tactic by terror groups as it has not been usual for women to launch terror attacks. Police spokesman Charles Owino says two of the women have been identified as Kenyans. One had a suicide vest that did not explode. Three female accomplices have been arrested from their Kibokoni residence in Mombasa.

South African woman sentenced to 10 years in jail for kidnapping a newborn baby in 1997

A South African woman who kidnapped a 3 day old newborn baby girl while she was sleeping beside her mother in a hospital in Cape Town in April 1997 and raised the girl as her own, was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Monday for kidnapping.
The presiding Judge, Judge John Hlophe in Cape Town announced the sentence, telling the 52-year-old convicted kidnapper that she had caused "immense" pain to the kidnapped girl's biological parents, the African News Agency reported.

The young woman who was kidnapped as a baby is known as Zephany Nurse, but that's not her real name, that name is the one given to her by her biological parents and used in the media in the years since her disappearance.

But since she has been found by her parents, she has chosen to continue using the name given to her by the kidnapper.

So in order to protect her privacy, a judge ordered that her adopted name and the name of her kidnapper should not be used by the media.

Zephany Nurse was reunited last year with her biological parents, Morne and Celeste Nurse, after the couple's second daughter befriended a girl at school who looked so much like her. The couple's second daughter was baffled by the similarities and told her parents about it. When her parents saw Zephany Nurse, they immediately suspected that she could be their long lost daughter, so they got the police involved.

A police investigation and DNA tests showed that the two girls were sisters and confirmed that the new friend was the Nurse's missing child.

During the court case, the kidnapper still maintained that she didn't kidnap the little girl in 1997 which annoyed the judge during sentencing.
Judge Hlophe criticized the kidnapper for sticking to her story that she had bought the baby from a woman who told her that the biological parents did not want the child.
Hlophe said:
"At the very least, one would expect you to apologize, but you chose not to."
The family of the convicted kidnapper blew kisses to her as she was led to a holding cell after the sentencing, and there was an alleged confrontation between the kidnapper's family and Zephany Nurse's biological family outside the courthouse.
Chantall Berry, Zephany Nurse's aunt allegedly said:
"She belongs to us." "She has our DNA. Her DNA will never change."
Zephany Nurse's biological parents were in court for the sentencing Monday, but their daughter was not. Zephany Nurse has not been allowed to have any contact with the convicted kidnapper but has been living with the kidnapper's husband, who she thought was her biological father.

The prosecution said the woman defrauded authorities when she registered Zephany Nurse as her own daughter in 2003 under a false birthdate.

A 21-year-old man is currently in Police custody in Tema, Ghana for attempting to behead his friend for rituals. Charles Ashitey, also known as Zaga was arrested by some residents of Tema Newtown after his attempt to behead his 19-year-old friend, Daniel Norteye, failed.

According to the Police, on 31st July, 2016, Norteye was tired after a dance rehearsal and decided to spend the night in the room of the suspect...

However, at about 4:00am, Norteye felt a sharp pain on his neck. He woke only to see the suspect, Ayitey holding a knife and cutting his throat. He then struggled with suspect, which resulted in multiple cuts in the victim’s palm and abdomen but he was eventually able to escape with the knife and was rushed to his aunt’s house where he was taken to the Tema Newtown Police Station to lodge an official complaint. He was then taken to the Tema General Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Further investigations in the room of the suspect revealed a stinking beheaded snake, egg shells, and powder, which were sprinkled around the room. A wooden doll was also found in the room as well. When suspect was asked on how he came by those items and why he had sprinkled powder in his room, he said the snake was for a friend who was going to eat it but suspect pleaded with his friend to give it to him.

He was however unable to tell the police what he was going to use the snake and other materials for. I stayed to save my marriage" says woman whose hands were chopped off by her husband for not conceiving

When Jackline Mwende sought advice on her bad marriage, she was given the same counsel many women in abusive relationships get: stay and fight for your marriage. The first pastor she went to for advice told her to stay and pray for her marriage.

Long before Ms Mwende's hands were hacked off by her husband, Stephen Ngila, 34, for not conceiving, their seven-year marriage had been plagued with constant fights that stemmed from not having a child.

A hospital in Nairobi told the couple that Ms Mwende was fertile and healthy but her husband had reproductive "issues". However, she believed in her marriage and had been advised by another pastor and some of her friends to stay and try to save it.

Pastor Patrick Kioko of Masii District SDA church, who was the couple's best man on Monday told Nation Kenya that the marriage between Ms Mwende and Mr Ngila had been rosy at the beginning but things started changing towards the end of last year.

"It seemed there was hope for reconciliation but the man was not ready to mend the union. In fact, he even moved out and rented a room in Masii town."

He said Mwende was afraid "to be seen as the one who broke her marriage".
This was escalated to a church hearing because the issues seemed unresolved and the couple was urged to settle their differences and save their marriage.

"But we noticed the man was determined to leave. So it was agreed that they live in peace in their separate homes and ask the courts to dissolve the marriage. Because, as a church, we don’t end marriages."

He said the church was planning to bring them together but then the attack happened.

"We were shocked how it turned out even after all the effort we put in. Anger is dangerous in a union and this is something we all should learn from."

Ms Mwende met Mr Ngila, a tailor, shortly after finishing Standard Eight in Kathama Primary School, Machakos County, in 2010, and she says it was love at first sight. She described her husband as a "kind and God-fearing" man.

"He taught me how to make dresses and clothes. We fell in love during this time and we had a church wedding three months later," she said. "But he gradually became violent and a drunk. He spent more time in Masii town and would come back late at night, drunk and violent. He also chewed miraa. When he attacked me on Sunday, he was drunk. But I stayed because I wanted to save the marriage and my home."

Tears welled up in her mother’s eyes on hearing her daughter’s determination to save her marriage.

"I pleaded with her to pack her things and leave their home in Ilinge village because of the constant quarrels, but she said he would change. Then this happened,” Ms Jane Munyoki, the mother, lamented. "I gave him my daughter, who was complete and well, and now she does not have hands. I hope the government does not release him. I am afraid that if he is let go, I will die of depression."

Meanwhile, Stephen Ngila has been charged with attempted murder of his wife. He appeared before Wamunyu Law Court Resident Magistrate K. Kibellion. He denied the charges and was sent to the Machakos GK remand until August 5. He was also denied bond until the same date when the court will rule on the issue.
