(Photos) Shock as man who 'died' from snake bite wakes up seconds before cremation'

A young man in India who was presumed to have died after being bitten by a snake rose up from the funeral pyre at the moment it was set on fire.
The 23-year-old man, named as Sandeep, was attacked while collecting wood from the forest.
When he arrived back in his village in the Raisen district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, he told his family about the snake bite.
Instead of taking Sandeep to a hospital, they brought him to a traditional tantric practitioner in a nearby village, Daily Mirrror reports..
But the tantric’s treatment proved ineffective and it was assumed the young man had passed away.

Villagers were left baffled at what to do because some in India claim that those who die of snake bites should be buried rather than burned.
In the end it was decided that his body was to be taken to the local cemetery where a funeral pyre was prepared.
But when the fire almost reached the body of Sandeep, the young man started to shout and people realised he was still alive.
Sandeep was taken to the same tantric practitioner instead of a hospital after he regained consciousness. But again his life could not be saved, and the tantric declared Sandeep dead for the second time. He was taken to the district hospital where a post-mortem examination took place.

Indian man who 'died' from snake bite wakes up seconds before cremation and dies again

A 23 year old Indian man simply identified as Sandeep, who was presumed dead after being bitten by a snake rose up from the dead at his own funeral, just as his body was about to be cremated.
Sandeep, was bitten by a snake while collecting wood from the forest far from his village. When he got back to his village in the Raisen district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, he told his family that he had been bitten by a snake.

Rather than take him to a hospital for treatment, his family took him to a traditional tantric practitioner in a nearby village, hoping that traditional medicine would cure him but the traditional cure didn't seem to have healed Sandeep, so they assumed he had died.

The family took his body to a local cemetery, where a funeral pyre was prepared. They placed his body and lit the fire, but by the time the fire almost reached his body, the young man started screaming, that was when people realised that he was still alive.

After he regained consciousness, his family took him to that same tantric practitioner who had previously declared him dead, instead of taking him to the hospital.

Again. the tantric couldn't save him and declared Sandeep dead for the second time.

He was then taken to the district hospital where he was confirmed dead and a post-mortem examination was done.

How I refused N405m money laundering offer by governor — Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana has disclosed how he declined a mouth-watering N405 million brief from an unnamed former governor to help him launder funds abroad. Femi Falana Falana, whose testimonial is contained in the current edition of ALERT, a monthly pull-out by the EFCC, pleaded with his colleagues to be wary of briefs from politically-exposed persons (PEPs). Falana explained that the governor had asked him to assist in moving a huge sum of money to an undisclosed country and offered to pay him £1 million reward for his service but he declined outright. The legal luminary said: “The governor asked me to assist him in transferring money abroad, and that I should claim it to be proceeds from sale of his property in Nigeria. “And the price was extremely attractive. He was going to pay me a million pounds then, when money was money “The governor said he had chosen me for the shady deal, because ‘nobody will suspect you.’ “I told him, ‘Your Excellency, so it is my reputation that you want to buy with your one million pounds?’ “Some of my colleagues thought I was stupid, but those who accepted the offer later found themselves in trouble, as they were arrested and humiliated. They were only lucky not to have been charged to court.” He advised lawyers against being used by politically-exposed persons. He also asked lawyers not to succumb to the lure of filthy lucre to assist politically-exposed persons (PEPs) to commit financial crimes. “Lawyers have a paramount role to play in the fight against economic and financial crimes, as they are the ones usually employed by well-heeled members of the society to help perfect documents for illicit transactions, and to cover up their tracks.”

AFN seeks clarification on disqualified 4x400m team

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria is waiting for more information from the World Anti Doping Agency and the  International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the status of the Nigerian 4x400m relay quartet, which stands disqualified following the alleged dope offence of an athlete in the team.
The women 4x400m was one of the Nigerian teams with a realistic chance of winning a medal at the Games beginning on August 5. But there will be no Olympic slot for the team, following the involvement of Tosin Adeloye in the races that qualified the Nigerian women for Rio 2016. Adeloye was suspended from athletics competitions, after she tested positive to banned substances from the Warri Relays in 2014. “At the moment our team stands suspended. But we are waiting for further clarifications from the world anti doping agency WADA and the IOC to know the true position of the team, “ said a member of the AFN yesterday. The team featuring Adeloye won bronze at the IAAF world relays in Bahamas in 2014 and placed 5th at the IAAF World Championships in 2015 where they ran a season’s best of 3.23.27 seconds in the heats and 3.25.11 in the final. Those times qualified the team for the Olympics, however, yesterday a check through the IAAF website confirmed that the performances by the Nigerian team has been disqualified by the IAAF, effectively ending any chance of Nigeria featuring in the Games

Restaurant owner is forced to eat cockroach found in customer's food

A customer who ordered fried noodles from a restaurant in Changsha, Hunan province, China on July 25th, forced the restaurant's owner to eat a cockroach he said he found in his food.
After the customer found the supposed cockroach, he told the restaurant owner to either eat the cockroach or pay him 5,000 yuan (£569).
The owner ate the cockroach instead. But the customer wasn't a man of his word, as he kept demanding money from the owner, adding that he needed to be compensated financially for the bad experience he had, but the owner refused to give in to the customer's demands.

According to the owner and other customers, the restaurant had been running for 11 years and had never encountered problems like this.

Some workers at the restaurant claimed that they thought they were being blackmailed by the customer. One worker even fought tears while she talked to reporters who came to interview them, saying she was upset that her boss had been forced to eat the insect.

After the incident, o n July 26, the Food and Drug Administration visited the restaurant for an inspection and discovered that the restaurant was using outdated equipment and did not have the necessary means to rid the establishment of flies or rats.

The FDA then ordered the restaurant to close for five days so that they could make the necessary changes.

A trigger-happy policeman has killed a patent medicine dealer, identified as Tochukwu Iro.

“He was shot in the thigh. Other SARS operatives immediately rushed him to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

16 Difficult Interview Questions And Answers

Being prepared is half the battle. If you are one of those executive types unhappy at your present post and embarking on a New Year's resolution to find a new one, here's a helping hand. The job interview is considered to be the most critical aspect of every expedition that brings you face-to- face with the future boss. One must prepare for it with the same tenacity and quickness as one does for a fencing tournament or a chess match. This article has been excerpted from "PARTING COMPANY: How to Survive the Loss of a Job and Find Another Successfully" by William J. Morin and James C. Cabrera. Copyright by Drake Beam Morin, inc. Published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. Morin is chairman and Cabrera is president of New York-based Drake Beam Morin, nation's major outplacement firm, which has opened offices in Philadelphia.

1. Tell me about yourself.
Since this is often the opening question in an interview, be extracareful that you don't run off at the mouth. Keep your answer to a minute or two at most. Cover four topics: early years, education, work history, and recent career experience. Emphasize this last subject. Remember that this is likely to be a warm-up question. Don't waste your best points on it.

2. What do you know about our organization?
You should be able to discuss products or services, revenues, reputation, image, goals, problems, management style, people, history and philosophy. But don't act as if you know everything about the place. Let your answer show that you have taken the time to do some research, but don't overwhelm the interviewer, and make it clear that you wish to learn more. You might start your answer in this manner: "In my job search, I've investigated a number of companies. Yours is one of the few that interests me, for these reasons..."Give your answer a positive tone. Don't say, "Well, everyone tells me that you're in all sorts of trouble, and that's why I'm here", even if that is why you're there.

3. Why do you want to work for us?
The deadliest answer you can give is "Because I like people." What else would you like-animals? Here, and throughout the interview, a good answer comes from having done your homework so that you can speak in terms of the company's needs. You might say that your research has shown that the company is doing things you would like to be involved with, and that it's doing them in ways that greatly interest you. For example, if the organization is known for strong management, your answer should mention that fact and show that you would like to be a part of that team. If the company places a great deal of emphasis on research and development, emphasize the fact that you want to create new things and that you know this is a place in which such activity is encouraged. If the organization stresses financial controls, your answer should mention a reverence for numbers. If you feel that you have to concocts an answer to this question - if, for example, the company stresses research, and you feel that you should mention it even though it really doesn't interest you- then you probably should not be taking that interview, because you probably shouldn't be considering a job with that organization. Your homework should include learning enough about the company to avoid approaching places where you wouldn't be able -or wouldn't want- to function. Since most of us are poor liars, it's difficult to con anyone in an interview. But even if you should succeed at it, your prize is a job you don't really want.

4. What can you do for us that someone else can't?
Here you have every right, and perhaps an obligation, to toot your own horn and be a bit egotistical. Talk about your record of getting things done, and mention specifics from your resume or list of career accomplishments. Say that your skills and interests, combined with this history of getting results, make you valuable. Mention your ability to set priorities, identify problems, and use your experience and energy to solve them.

5. What do you find most attractive about this position? What seems least attractive about it?
List three or four attractive factors of the job, and mention a single, minor, unattractive item.

6. Why should we hire you?
Create your answer by thinking in terms of your ability, your experience, and your energy. (See question 4.)

7. What do you look for in a job?
Keep your answer oriented to opportunities at this organization. Talk about your desire to perform and be recognized for your contributions. Make your answer oriented toward opportunity rather than personal security.

8. Please give me your defintion of [the position for which you are being interviewed].
Keep your answer brief and task oriented. Think in in terms of responsibilities and accountability. Make sure that you really do understand what the position involves before you attempt an answer. If you are not certain. ask the interviewer; he or she may answer the question for you.

9. How long would it take you to make a meaningful contribution to our firm?
Be realistic. Say that, while you would expect to meet pressing demands and pull your own weight from the first day, it might take six months to a year before you could expect to know the organization and its needs well enough to make a major contribution.

10. How long would you stay with us?
Say that you are interested in a career with the organization, but admit that you would have to continue to feel challenged to remain with any organization. Think in terms of, "As long as we both feel achievement-oriented."

11. Your resume suggests that you may be over-qualified or too experienced for this position. What's Your opinion?
Emphasize your interest in establishing a long-term association with the organization, and say that you assume that if you perform well in his job, new opportunities will open up for you. Mention that a strong company needs a strong staff. Observe that experienced executives are always at a premium. Suggest that since you are so well qualified, the employer will get a fast return on his investment. Say that a growing, energetic company can never have too much talent.

12. What is your management style?
You should know enough about the company's style to know that your management style will complement it. Possible styles include: task oriented (I'll enjoy problem-solving identifying what's wrong, choosing a solution and implementing it"wink, results-oriented ("Every management decision I make is determined by how it will affect the bottom line"wink, or even paternalistic ("I'm committed to taking care of my subordinates and pointing them in the right direction"wink. A participative style is currently quite popular: an open-door method of managing in which you get things done by motivating people and delegating responsibility. As you consider this question, think about whether your style will let you work happily and effectively within the organization.

13. Are you a good manager? Can you give me some examples? Do you feel that you have top managerial potential?
Keep your answer achievement and ask-oriented. Rely on examples from your career to buttress your argument. Stress your experience and your energy.

14. What do you look for when You hire people?
Think in terms of skills. initiative, and the adaptability to be able to work comfortably and effectively with others. Mention that you like to hire people who appear capable of moving up in the organization.

15. Have you ever had to fire people? What were the reasons, and how did you handle the situation?
Admit that the situation was not easy, but say that it worked out well, both for the company and,you think, for the individual. Show that, like anyone else, you don't enjoy unpleasant tasks but that you can resolve them efficiently and -in the case of firing someone- humanely.

16. What do you think is the most difficult thing about being a manager or executive?
Mention planning, execution, and cost-control. The most difficult task is to motivate and manage employees to get something planned and completed on time and within the budget.

Kidnapper Sells Boy For N1,500 In Ogun, Attempts To Strangle Another

A suspected child abductor, Ola Ibikunle, has been detained by the police after he was caught with a four-year-old girl in the Oyero area of Ijoko, Ogun State.

It was learnt that Ibikunle, a bricklayer, had held his victim, Eniola, by the neck and was about to strangle her in an uncompleted building when he was caught by passersby.

The suspect, who confessed to have stolen a three-year-old boy and sold him for N1,500, was later handed over to operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Agbado Police Division.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Eniola and her 11-year-old sister, Opeyemi, were following their father, Segun Quadri, to a church in Ijoko around 2pm on Tuesday.

The father was said to have gone some distance ahead when the suspect ambushed the children and abducted Eniola.

The victim’s sister, Opeyemi, reportedly raised the alarm which caught the attention of some passersby.

The suspect was reportedly met in an uncompleted building while trying to strangle the girl.

An angry mob had beaten him up before the police arrived on the scene.

Ibikunle, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, told our correspondent that Eniola was his second victim.

The suspect, who spoke in Yoruba, confessed to have stolen a three-year-old boy around the Ijoko area sometime in June and sold him to a man in the Sango area for N1,500.

He said, “I am a bricklayer, but I use child abduction to augment my wages. A man in the Sango area contracted me to always get children for him. I don’t know what he uses them for. Last month, I abducted a boy of about three years and sold him to the man for N1,500.

“This girl (Eniola) was the second child I would abduct, but I did not succeed.”

The victim’s father, Segun, said he and the children were already late for a church programme on that day which made him to walk faster than them.

He said, “The incident happened around 1pm on Tuesday. We had a programme in our church and we were late. Since Opeyemi is older, I thought they should be able to find their way to the church.

“I had gone some distance ahead when some people called me that Opeyemi said her younger sister had been abducted. She said the abductor escaped with Eniola to an uncompleted building and she led us there. We met him holding her by the neck.”

A police source told our correspondent that efforts were being made to apprehend the buyer of the abducted children.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime and he stated that he sells his victims to a man in the Sango area. But he has yet to mention the name of the kingpin. Some operatives followed him to the area twice, but he did not lead them to the man’s house. We are going to ensure that we track him down,” the source said.

The Ogun State acting Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect would be further investigated.

He said, “It is a case of suspected child stealing. The police were able to arrest the suspect with the help of residents. The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has directed that the suspect should be transferred to the command headquarters for a thorough investigation.”

Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi Speaks On The 50th Year Of Aguiyi Ironsi's Death

By Anayo Okoli

For Lady Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi, the shock of the news of the tragic death of her husband, the late former Head of State, Lt. General Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi can never go away. She described the day and entire period as shocking and terrible dark days. But she remains grateful to God that she weathered it all.
In this interview in Umuahia, Lady Aguiyi Ironsi laments that both the Federal and State Government do not accord the nation’s heroes the respect they deserve.

Today is 50 years of the tragic death of your husband. How did you receive the news?

Well, it is 50 years now, I am happy that God has kept us alive till today. And today, one can look back to those dark days. It is not a day one can forget in life, we keep remembering it. The shock can never go away.

How did you feel when the news came? As the wife at home, all of a sudden the news came that your husband, the Head of State, has been killed. How did you receive the news?

Shocking, it was a terrible thing. But usually when a soldier marries a woman, he always tries to bring her up to his standard, that is to be brave and courageous. Time without number, they go out and they don’t return. They tell us as wives, ‘as a soldier, I can die any day.’ They don’t hesitate to tell us something like that. And when they tell us things like that, we always think they are just talking, but they are teaching us something serious, really. In my case, when I got worried, he would advise me not to be worried. He would tell me, ‘don’t be worried, I am a soldier, I can die any day.’ So on this fateful day, it happened. Where did he go to, a meeting in Ibadan; Fujuyi was hosting him at the State House, Ibadan. From a meeting you don’t see your husband again; he was not sick, nothing. What you do, nothing, you wouldn’t even know what to do, you are just empty. It is only God that can console you, that time you need God most. That was what happened to me, it was shocking. You don’t even know the true situation of things. Nobody told me whether he was dead or alive. For so many months, no information on whether he was killed. People just kept trooping in [to the State House], saying this and saying that, then you are dumb, you can’t even talk. I just kept looking at thousands of people that came to see me. Who were you going to talk to? Some people said they saw him in Umuahia, his home town, some said they saw him in other places, I was just looking at people talking, I did not know what to contribute. I was just confused, looking at them.

But being the wife of a general, and going by what he used to tell you about the risk in his profession, were you able to put one and two together to sense that he was dead?

Oh yes. That was why I called Emeka [Col. Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, the Governor of Eastern Region] and told him to take me down to the East, that I didn’t think I would continue to remain here [State House], Lagos. I called him to make arrangement to move me down, and he did that immediately.

Were you with the children then?

Of course, even my first son who came from London on holidays followed him [Gen Ironsi] to Ibadan for the meeting. I did not even remember that he was there with him, he followed his father to Ibadan for a meeting; he said he wanted to have a sight-seeing. A young boy, who had been in London all his life, just came home on holidays. I didn’t even remember again that he was with his father because my brain was off.

How did your son feel the tragic incident?

He was with his father in the State House, Ibadan, when the soldiers came [to arrest his father]. His father put him in the wardrobe and went down stairs to meet the soldiers who came for him. He warned his son, ‘don’t enter any car, just take train and go back to Lagos.’ A very clever boy, he did as instructed and came back to Lagos on train.

Was he the person who eventually told you what actually happened to your husband?

No, he did not even talk. He just entered and said, ‘oh, I have a brave father. I have a brave father, he didn’t allow them to touch him; he followed them to wherever they were going.’ He said he looked through the window, that his father just entered his car and followed them. And Fujuyi, (who was his host])insisted that he must go with them where they were going. He said he was looking at them as they left. He told me, ‘mummy, dad said I should tell you not to cry.’

How are you planning the memorial service?

The church service will hold Friday, 29th July, at the Martha Day Catholic Cathedral, Umuahia, and reception will hold here in the house. The memorial service is to thank God for keeping us alive. He, himself, being a man of God would be happy where ever he is now. So we have to thank God. Members of the Legions have indicated interest to come and they will go to his burial site to pay him respect.

What of the Military authority, did you extend invitations to them?

My dear, only members of the Legion have said they would come. But the Military know about it. 50 years anniversary is a national thing. Even the Federal and State Governments ought to take it serious, but they are busy doing their politics. It is their responsibility to do everything I am doing now about this programme, but they don’t care, the Government, both Federal and State, are busy doing politics, and the past heroes they don’t recognize them. It is a major event in the nation’s history, but look at how they are handling it. The man who just phoned me is the chairman of the Legions in the State, informing me that they are coming in their uniform.

The charismatic libero captained the Senior National Team for 11 years, winning the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze. In 2013, as Coach of the Super Eagles, Keshi lifted the Cup of Nations again after Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final at Soccercity in Johannesburg. In a 44 –month spell as head strategist of the Super Eagles, Keshi also took the team to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, led the team to the FIFA Confederations Cup and qualified Nigeria for the African Nations Championship for the first time, winning bronze at the competition. Family sources have also confirmed that the remains of the legend will be interred at his hometown, Illah, on Friday.

Man who fought for custody of his son for almost a year gets the devastating news he had been dreading

Dillon Wyckoff who had been in a year-long custody battle over his two-year-old son, Mason Wyckoff got a tragic news on Friday that his little boy had passed away possibly at the hands of his mother. Emergency crews were called to his baby mama's apartment where they found the deceased toddler alongside his unconscious mother, Stephenie Erickson.

He told the Des Moines Register:
“He was everything in my world. She had threatened and threatened to do it, and she did it to hurt me. They haven’t proven anything yet, but I know down deep that’s what happened.”
“It’s been a year-long battle with all this stuff, and it’s been going downhill…We prayed and prayed it wouldn’t be this.”
Mason’s grandmother, Michel Cunningham, said they had lived in fear for months on end, worrying about Erickson’s mental stability especially after she told Wyckoff he would “never see his son again”:
“I tried contacting DHS (the Department of Human Services). We’ve dealt with over seven different police departments for over a year. They kept telling us that we had to wait for ‘something to happen.’ And look at what did.
Erickson who was found unconscious beside her 2 year old son was taken to a local hospital and remains in serious condition, though it’s not clear what injuries she sustained or how she got them.

Erickson’s neighbor said she’d “sit outside and smoke and cry” and never really talked to neighbours,
Wyckoff said of his son, Mason:
“He was always fun, always doing something. He was just getting to the age where I could start doing fun stuff with him, I was looking forward to a lot, a lot of fun. What we had is what we had, I don’t regret any moment of it.”
Amid an ongoing investigation into the incident, Wyckoff is certain that Erickson killed him.

How Yuguda withdrew N1bn in one day – Gov Abubakar

ABUJA—GOVERNOR Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, yesterday, gave insight on how his predecessor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, allegedly withdrew N1 billion from the state government’s account in one day, accusing him of squandering N2 billion ecological fund. Gov. Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi Abubakar, who spoke during an interface with journalists in Abuja, claimed the ecological fund was allegedly advanced to governors of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, under the administration of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. While he said a probe panel he instituted to review the eight-year tenure of his predecessor would soon submit its report, the governor claimed Yuguda received so much from the federation account during the oil boom period with nothing to show for it. He said: “For that reason, it is incumbent to ask questions. The EFCC have been knocking at my door, asking questions about the past and so I cannot keep quiet. “When I took over on May 29, 2015, the state was owing civil servants four months salaries; a state where civil servants and pensioners were owed N14.5 billion gratuity; a state where other loans comprising commercial and contractual liabilities amounted to over N100 billion.” ‘I did’t divert N8.6bn bail-out fund’ He dismissed allegations that he misappropriated the N8.6 billion bail out fund extended to the state by the Federal Government to assist her in offsetting outstanding salaries of civil servants. He said: “I took over when Ramadan was setting in and the state is about 90 percent Muslim, and salaries had not been paid for four months. “Bauchi State is dependent on salary because it is essentially a civil service state. I decided to pay a month salary, but the treasury was empty. I obtained a loan of N4 billion from which I utilised N2.6 billion to pay the May salary. “States were asked to submit the amount of debt in salaries owed to civil servants. Bauchi State submitted N8.6 billion because that was what we owed civil servants at that time. The N8.6 billion was again injected into the economy of the state in terms of payment of salaries and salary-related items. “We have not diverted any amount of money. We were able to inject this into the economy.”

Fix the economy now, Gowon tells Buhari

Osogbo—Former Head of state , General Yakubu Gowon (retd), yesterday, took a retrospective look at the situation in the country and asked President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the country’s economy regain its strength to alleviate the suffering of the masses.
Gowon spoke at Ile-Ife at a programme, Health Caravan and Award ceremony for the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, who was conferred with the Royal Ambassador for Hepatitis Advocacy in Nigeria by the Seham Health Care Foundation as part of activities to commemorate the 2016 World Hepatitis Day. Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the award ceremony, Gowon urged Nigerians to cooperate with the government, saying that the Federal Government was doing everything within its reach to resolve the economic challenges facing the nation. On solution to Nigeria’s economic challenges, Gowon said, “ Let the current authority find a way out of the current economic crisis. The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has been telling us what they have been doing to get the economy strong again. She said all will be well by September. Let’s wait till then. “I have left government for a long time, so I may not really  know what the problem is. The current administration should do whatever they can to solve to economic challenges. They should find a way to restore confidence in the citizens and the nation at large by fixing the economy.” On the controversial budget padding which resurfaced, the elder statesman wondered why the issue of budget padding became the order of the day in Nigeria, saying such never occurred during his administration. He, however, urged government not to allow anyone found guilty of budget padding to go scot free to serve as deterrent to others. His words: “ If that is true. If anybody is doing that, the person should be checked and stopped to ensure that such does not occur in the future. “We didn’t do it during my time. We had Chief Obafemi Awolowo in-charge of our finance and he taught us to survive without borrowing. Such (budget padding) should stop, there is no point doing that”, he added. Receiving the  award, the Ooni urged Nigerians to ensure that they support the less privileged in their domain. He expressed delight at being awarded and called on Nigerians to cultivate the habit of celebrating good leaders. On her part, the Executive Secretary of Seham, Princess Adepeju Hameed, explained that since the formation of the foundation, the rate of Hepatitis has reduced in Nigeria. She noted that the Ooni was awarded to deepen the awareness about the disease and its control.

Criticism trails CBN’s decision to hike MPR to 14%

ABUJA—The Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), yesterday, jerked up its Monetary Policy Rate  (MPR)to 14 per cent, attracting criticism from  business experts who predicted that the hike will lead to increased  corporate failures, unemployment  and decline in the nation’s stock market.
At the end of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, the CBN, raised the MPR from 12 percent  to 14 per cent, while retaining the Asymmetric Window at +200 and -500 basis points around the rate. The apex bank also retained the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) and the Liquidity Ratio at 22.50 per cent and 30.00 per cent, respectively. Governor of the CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who announced the outcome of the MPC meeting, said that the move was towards ensuring price stability as it would attract more inflow of foreign exchange into the country. Justifying the new rate, he said, “Basically, the issues were that you notice during the May meeting, the MPC decide to say look, if we notice the balance between inflation and growth that we should stay with growth and expect that growth.   But given the fact that monetary authorities cannot directly influence, we expect that working with fiscal authorities, we can achieve growth But at this meeting,  we took a lot of time to deliberate on whether to favour growth as against inflation. “We felt that there was a need in line with the CBN core mandate to look at price stability at a time- that if we favour price stability at this time and it signals an interest rate movement that will curtail inflation that when we curtail inflation, a lot more stakeholders interests would have been met, thereby encouraging in this case the inflow of capital into the country. “And as we have more inflow of foreign exchange into the country, what that does is that it deepens forex supply base and by deepening the forex  supply base it makes  forex  available to end users , particularly to the manufacturing sector who need raw materials to boost manufacturing and industrial capacity and we are also hoping that when this is achieved, what you find is that naturally, prices would be affected downwards. “When you have a situation when foreign exchange is also made available to those who want to import agriculture inputs, insecticides or plants it helps to boost agric productivity which will also help to moderate the effects on prices downwards. “What this does is that it generally creates activities that would boost not just manufacturing outputs but will indirectly push growth forward. That was purely the essence of let’s push to the direction of inflation and price stability which was the focus of this meeting against growth. “It didn’t mean that we didn’t have growth at the back of our minds.   But we felt let’s start by looking at price stability.   Push towards curtailing inflation, and at the same time ultimately see how we can achieve growth in the same vein.” Hike will worsen economic situation Analysts however faulted the decision of the MPC to hike the MPR saying it would worsen the economic situation in the country. “This is not an answer to recession, the answer is to make more money available, but the CBN has decided to be tactical because growth is a long term goal”, commented Mr. Bismarck Rewane,   Managing Director/Chief Executive, Financial Derivatives Limited “He stated that the MPR hike, “Is a formalisation of what is happening in the money market, where treasury bills rate are already higher than 14 percent hence it would not have effect on interest rate in the market. But it will increase cost of borrowing especially for small and medium enterprise (SMEs), increase default on debt, corporate failures and hence increase unemployment. It will also increase cost of borrowing for state governments. It will increase appetite for regulatory borrowing, because banks would now prefer to buy treasury bills and bonds which now offers higher rate. However it will make the naira to strengthen. According to the Managing Director, APT Securities and Funds, Mr. Garba Kurfi, “ The upward increase in interest rate by the CBN is not the best at the moment if government is serious in encouraging local production.   This is because high interest rate will make the cost of production higher if producers are to get loan at higher rate from the financial institutions. The high interest rate will discourage investments in the capital market if one can get 14 per cent risk free from the money market. This move apparently is likely to promote money market but with the inflation rate at 16.5 per cent may encourage”. Also commenting, Head, Investment Research, Cowry Asset Management Limited, Mr. Edgar Ebinum said,   “The reason for the hike is obvious but it is challenging for capital market, and it would stifle borrowing.  While it is necessary to ensure a positive real return, by making the interest rate higher than inflation, but investors look beyond interest rate, the conditions in the economy is still not attractive to foreign investors The decision will cause the real sector to slow down, because there would be reduction in lending to the sector. In fact the hike makes lending more difficult for banks. The banks are already battling against rising non-performing loans and hence have reduced lending activities”. Speaking in the same vein, Managing Director, High Cap Securities Limited,   Mr. David Adonri said, “The increase in MPR to nearly match inflation rate is expected response from the monetary authority. It will crowd out credit from real sector and depress equities market. The manufacturers would be affected as credit would be on the rise. Response of fiscal authority should be to reduce domestic borrowing and move towards fiscal consolidation” On his part, Mr. Kunle Ezun, a research analysts with  Econbank Plc noted, “The decision was expected and the expectation has been factored into transactions in the money market. Remember that TBs were been sold at 14 per cent last week. That is why the market is calm. “I also believe that the 200 basis point raise is sufficient to address the rising inflation level now. The reality is that inflation level is more of consideration to foreign investors and they are not in the market now. The local guys don’t really bother about inflation.” The hike in MPR was however commended by Managing Director, Chief Economist,Africa, Standard Chartered Bank, Mrs  Razia Khan.  She said, “The decision to raise the monetary policy rate despite growth concerns will give investors a clear signal on the authorities’ intent to sustain FX reforms.   This should be well-received. “Given the cost-push nature of inflation in Nigeria, which largely stems from the shortage of FX, we believe that this was the right thing to have done.   Today’s monetary policy decision demonstrates a commitment to FX liberalisation, which alone will undo some of the bottlenecks that have contributed to inflation. “As Nigeria embarks upon the path of reform (FX liberalisation, fuel price deregulation, transparency initiatives, efforts to boost revenue mobilisation, power sector reforms), all with a view to easing the economy’s transition to lower oil prices, and creating the foundation for more sound long-term growth, we think that today’s MPC decision represented an important initial step in the right direction. Chief Executive Officer, SOFUNIX Investment and Communications Ltd and Chartered Stockbroker     Mr. Sola Oni,  said The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has pushed up the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 12 per cent to 14 per cent on the basis that the existing nominal anchor is a disincentive to investment for both foreign and indigenous investors, particularly, when compared to the current inflation rate. In portfolio management, the logical assumption is that relationship between interest rate and stock market is inverse. This implies that when interest rate is low, speculators move their funds from the   money market instruments’ to the stock market to make a kill. As a corollary, the same speculators move from the stock market to other asset classes, especially, fixed income securities when the interest rate is high. By this logic, one can assume that the current increase in the MPR would boost investment in the fixed income securities while it may depress investors’ appetite for equity investment. But the fact remains that it is not always so as economists would say ceteris paribus which means all things being equall. There are many exogenous factors that affect investment decision at the level of investment objective. As for the economy, the stock market mirrors the economy. Therefore, it is not cast in iron to just conclude that the CBN’s increase of the MPC to a 10 -year high will have negative impact on the stock market.”

Nigerian embassy told to visit 4 nationals on death row as Indonesia gives 72 hours notice of impending executions

Indonesia has given a group of death row inmates 72 hours notice before they face the firing squad. Authorities have been making preparations, with death row drug convicts transferred to Nusakambangan prison island (pictured) where Indonesia puts convicts to death.

Fourteen prisoners are listed for execution, among them four Nigerian nationals, including Humphrey Ejike Jefferson and Michael Tutus Igwe, a Pakistani, one Indonesian woman, a Chinese, and Taiwanese nationals. Lawyers for some of the inmates have told ABC their clients may seek last-minute clemency from President Joko Widodo, meaning their executions could be delayed.

Meanwhile, Nigerian embassy were told to visit the Nigerian nationals in Cilacap yesterday, July 25 as they could be executed is days, reports Samantha Hawley for ABC Jakarta.

Despite widespread international condemnation from Diplomats and rights groups, President Widodo is determined to push ahead with the execution, insisting Jakarta is fighting a war against drugs and traffickers must be harshly punished.

The country's Attorney-General's office, which oversees executions, would not confirm any details but spokesman Mohammad Rum said: "The time is approaching."

However, Deputy Pakistani ambassador in Jakarta Syed Zahid Raza said the convicts, including a Pakistani, could be executed around midnight Friday. Pakistan has so far publicly voiced the most concern about the upcoming executions, and its foreign ministry summoned the Indonesian ambassador to Islamabad to convey their concerns about the case of their national, 52-year-old Zulfiqar Ali.

Activists said Mr Ali, sentenced to death in 2005 for heroin possession, was beaten and tortured into confessing and did not receive a fair trial. Rights groups have also called on Indonesia to halt the planned executions, citing worries about irregularities with some convictions.

In a statement, Amnesty International urged "the country's authorities to halt all executions and to take immediate steps to ensure that the cases of all those under sentence of death are reviewed by an independent and impartial body".
There have also been concerns over the case of a female Indonesian drug convict, Merri Utami, who is among the group. Rights group the National Commission on Violence Against Women said the former domestic worker was tricked into trafficking heroin.

Authorities have been making preparations, with death row drug convicts transferred to Nusakambangan prison island, where Indonesia puts convicts to death, and 14 prisoners reportedly placed in isolation — an usual step before executions.

About 1,500 police were being deployed around Cilacap, the town closest to Nusakambangan, visitors have been barred for a week and Muslim and Christian spiritual counsellors were seen crossing to the island.

Hillary Clinton Is Democratic Presidential Nominee

Hillary Clinton became the first woman in history to win the White House nomination of a major US political party Tuesday, securing the backing of Democrats at a convention in Philadelphia.

The former first lady, senator and secretary of state took a monumental step on her quest to become American’s first female president, by besting party challenger Bernie Sanders.

After a tumultuous convention opening which saw Sanders and Clinton supporters trade jeers and chants, Clinton passed the 2,382-delegate threshold needed for the nomination, setting up a showdown with Republican Donald Trump in November.

“History,” said a post on her Twitter account.

Although the outcome was a foregone conclusion, the state-by-state vote saw rowdy displays on the convention floor.

Some diehard Sanders delegates expressed frustration with their candidate’s defeat, but the divisions seen were much less pronounced than on Monday.

Clinton’s nomination was formally put forward by Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, the longest serving woman in the history of the US Congress.

Civil rights icon John Lewis, a congressman from Georgia, seconded the nomination.

‘Show a little class’

The Clinton camp is looking to unite the party’s factions.

Monday saw disruptive protests and a rancorous fight over leaked emails that showed party bias against Sanders. Frustration boiled over as his delegates jeered speakers who mentioned Clinton.

Vice President Joe Biden, who will address the convention Wednesday along with President Barack Obama, dismissed concerns the party was not uniting behind Clinton.

“We’ve got to show a little class and let them be frustrated for a while. It’s OK,” he said of Sanders supporters as he toured the convention arena Tuesday.

Sanders meanwhile called on his supporters to get behind Clinton.

“What we must do, or forever look back in regret, is defeat Donald Trump and elect Hillary Clinton,” he said Tuesday while addressing the California delegation.

“In my view, it’s easy — it’s easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face who would be living under a Donald Trump presidency,” he said.

Trump took the usual shots at Clinton during a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Charlotte, North Carolina, calling her “Crooked Hillary” and charging that her use of a private email account as secretary of state “put America’s entire national security at risk.”

A Clinton campaign official said Tuesday’s convention events aim to draw a sharp contrast with Trump. The line-up of speakers will talk about her life-long fights to make a difference.

Chief among them will be former president Bill Clinton, who will take the stage during primetime to hail his wife as a “change-maker,” the official said.

But Clinton and the others — including mothers who have lost children to gun violence or in clashes with police — will also have the unstated mission of mending fences with Sanders’ army of vocal young activists.

Yoruba, Hausa residents clash in Lagos: 3 killed, Customs officer injured

LAGOS—Three persons were shot dead yesterday, during a shootout between hoodlums and some officers attached to the Federal Operations Zone A, Ikeja, of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, at White Sand community in Ijora Badia area of Lagos State.

Three others, among who was a Customs officer, also sustained gunshot injuries. Trouble started, Monday, following a clash between Hausa and Yoruba residents over accusation by the latter that the former had been terrorising the area. A resident, Tajudeen Shamsudeen, explained that a boy, identified as Ojo, said to be on his way home, was allegedly stabbed to death by some Hausa boys. Shamsudeen said: “For long, these Hausa boys have been attacking people here. They waylay people, dispose them of cash and belongings. Even rulers of both ethnic groups are aware of the issue.” The attack on Ojo, according to him, sparked a riot during which dangerous weapons were freely used by both parties. But for the timely arrival of policemen from Ijora Badia, the situation would have assumed a violent dimension. 10 persons were said to have been arrested in connection with the unrest. Demolition Vanguard gathered that demolition of shanties in the troubled community started yesterday morning. While unconfirmed reports had it that it was on the order of the state government, the Hausa alleged that the demolition was carried out in their places of abode only. While the demolition was ongoing, some Custom officers, who residents alleged were invited by the Seriki Hausa, stormed the community in three patrol vehicles at about 2.30p.m. They were alleged to have fired sporadically to scare off some hoodlums, who were roaming the area. The hoodlums were said to have resisted the Customs men, who allegedly attempted to stop the demolition, an action that led to a shootout, during which three persons were felled by bullets. One of the bullets from the hoodlums hit a Customs officer. The Customs men then fled the scene, heading towards Apapa. As at 5p.m., Vanguard gathered that the injured officer was being treated at the Lagoon Hospital, Apapa, with two police patrol vans stationed within the hospital premises. One of those hit by a stray bullet was Azeez Tajudeen. Eyewitnesses said he was first taken to the police station for a police report, before being rushed to an undisclosed hospital. Police story Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, a Superintendent of Police, however, said only one person died, while two others are recuperating in the hospital. She said:”The community and the police were on a joint operation of raiding black spots within the community and arresting suspected criminals yesterday. “In the process, some officers of the Nigerian Customs Service officers, who were with officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, had an encounter with some of the hoodlums. “They fired some shots and three people were hit. As a result, one death was recorded, while two others are receiving treatment in the hospital. Policemen are not involved.”
