Iheanacho sues Manchester lawyers

Manchester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho has dragged two lawyers in the Manchester area to court over image rights. Iheanacho, claimed that he was lured into signing over rights to his name to area attorneys Robert Zanicky, of Drums, and Raymond Hassay, of Exeter. Iheanacho, 20, met Zanicky in early 2013, when he was 16, after Zanicky approached him following the 2013 African Under-17 Championships. An agreement was signed in late July 2013 by Zanicky and Iheanacho’s father. The contract, which was signed for $1,000, enabled Zanicky, Hassay and their combined venture, First Eleven Management, in Wilkes-Barre, image rights to Iheanacho. Iheanacho When Iheanacho turned 18, Zanicky convinced the striker to sign another contract that turned over 100 percent of his image rights to RHRZ LLC and Team Kelechi LLC, based in Pittston. “The assignment governs all of Kelechi’s image rights, defined to include all legal and beneficial rights and goodwill stemming from Kelechi’s name, nickname, initials, autograph, caricature, reputation and endorsements,” the lawsuit states. It also prohibited Iheanacho from signing with another party for the use of his image or likeness. First Eleven, acting as Team Kelechi’s “exclusive agent” was able to market, sell or licenses Kelechi’s image. Images licensed out garnered First Eleven 20 percent of the gross revenue. The duo also would receive 50 percent compensation from RHRZ LLC. At the time their first contact was agreed upon, Iheanacho said, he was not aware of Zanicky’s suspension from the practice of law after pleading no contest to two counts of corruption of minors. According to Times Leader records, Zanicky, who was president of the United Soccer Training Academy, was charged in 2011 with corrupting the morals of two girls, who were 16 and 17 at the time.

War of words as NLC finally splits

President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr. Ayuba  Wabba, and his United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, counterpart, Mr. Joe Ajaero, are at each other’s throats  following the emergence  of ULC  on December 17. Ajaero, until the emergence  of ULC, was a factional President of NLC, arising from the crisis that rocked NLC in the wake of the disputed outcome of the March 2015 National Delegates Conference, NDC, in Abuja. The relationship between the  Wabba- led NLC and the  Ajaero faction had  been distrust such  that all efforts to reconcile the factions by Congress veterans  one of including immediate past governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, ended up achieving nothing. A report of the reconciliatory committee, headed  by the founding president of the  NLC,  Alhaji Hassan Sunmonu, was never implemented despite appeals from several quarters including industrial unions.
The widening gap between the factions manifested  during the failed strike to protest government withdrawal of subsidy on  Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise known as petrol. While the Ajaero faction  decided to meet government to find solution to the issue, the Wabba faction opted for a nationwide strike. In fact, when the Federal Government invited the factions for a meeting over the subsidy removal, Wabba was quoted as saying  he would not hold meeting with government alongside the Ajaero faction, forcing government to hold separate meetings with the factions. The feud between the factions climaxed on December 17, when the  Ajaero faction finally broke away from NLC to announce the formation of a new labour centre alongside some affiliates of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, and some industrial unions that were neither affiliated to NLC nor TUC. Wabara opens fire Reacting to emergence of the ULC, Wabba  said: “Our attention has been drawn to news report in which Comrade Joe Ajaero, the General Secretary of NUEE, and Igwe Achese, President of NUPENG claimed they have formed a new labour centre called the United Labour Congress (ULC). It will be recalled that following their defeat at the March 2015 rescheduled election in their bid to lead the NLC, these Comrades have been parading themselves as ‘president, ‘ and  ‘deputy president’ of NLC respectively.. The  factional NLC President went on: “The Congress would like to assure our members across the length and breadth of the country and the general public that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress is committed to the unity of the working class in the country notwithstanding the latest declaration by Comrade Ajaero and Achese. We shall do everything within our power to preserve the unity and coherence of the labour movement which was handed down to us by our forebears in the movement. It will be recalled that our Comrades in their ambition to lead Nigerian Workers in February, 2015, at the elections which would have concluded the 10th  delegates conference of the NLC, disrupted and scattered the ballot papers that were already casted, in the full glare of the world. “This was after delegates had voted to waive the requirement to allow Comrade Igwe Achese who has been campaigning to be President, to step down to deputy president position, and declare support for the candidacy of Joe Ajaero. At the rescheduled election held in March 2015, following the intervention of the veterans of our movement, and with the provision of adequate security, the plot of Comrades Ajaero and Achese to disrupt the elections again once it was clear that their combined forces will not deliver them the leadership of Nigerian workers they had so clamoured for, was thwarted, and the election results were successfully announced.” Wabba, while recalling the efforts by the reconciliatory committee headed  Sunmonu to reconcile the  aggrieved parties, said: “We had spent considerable time and energy working with the veterans of congress to bring our estranged comrade fully back to the congress because as they say,  ‘if you allow a crack in your wall, you invite the lizard in’. We didn’t want our class opponents to use them as the weak link to undermine the solidarity of our movement. Unfortunately, as Nigerians saw during our last national strike against the fuel price increase by the Federal Government, our comrades chose to allow themselves to be used as willing tools to undermine our collective struggle. “It is quite ironic that these comrades can’t see the contradiction between their empty rhetorics on wanting to ‘fight non-payment of salaries’ and collaboration with the state to undermine popular action of the working people and the Nigerian masses. And yet when congress was in the frontline forcing their home state government(s) to pay workers wages and halt retrenchment of thousands of workers, they were nowhere to be seen. “The congress wish to assure all our members including those of NUEE, NUPENG and others listed as having attended the alleged launch of the new centre, that the NLC will continue to provide protection for them, and will ensure that their leaders do not out of their consuming ambition to be leaders of a ‘national center’ lead them into the wilderness.” Ajaero fires back Ajaero, scathing in his reply to the  Wabba statement, said the ULC was beyond Ajaero and Achese, as it  clearly brought together men and women   determined to create a platform that would offer Nigerians and workers a renewed hope in the portends of the labour movement. “We have clearly gone beyond the issues of the well-acknowledged duplicitous Delegates’ Conference of 2015 and the subsequent reconciliation efforts scuttled by the desires of Ayuba to continue sitting on the collective desires of Nigerian workers and their Unions to reform the movement repositioning it to serve Nigerian workers and masses better”, the ULC leader said. He added: “His (Wabara) insistence and fixation on this shows a complete naivety of the traditions and workings of the trade union movement. Anyway, this is a demonstration of utter desperation and the frustration of a drowning man who has refused to understand that you do not trifle with workers’ interests and hope to bind them to yourself by the use of force. The laws of the land are very clear on where the powers of each union resides. It is the Unions that affiliates with the centres and not individual workers. The unions have taken their decision to leave and that is how it stands. “It is important that we remind you that there is a natural law guaranteed in our constitution and various statutes which allows us that freedom of choice to decide who we can or cannot associate with. This natural law is fundamental and transcends our laws and statutes but fortunately in this case has been given vent by our various statutes. It is this same guarantee that protects all of us especially workers from rabid slavery in the hands of desperate despots bent on holding them captive forever. This is what allows individuals to freely choose and that is why a man or woman who is a Catholic or Anglican today would chose to become a Pentecostal tomorrow and nobody can do anything about it. It is also what allows Politicians to move from one party to another as you must have observed in the case of the PDP and APC. When one construct becomes obsolete and no longer in a position to deliver on its promises to its publics, individuals leave. That is what has happened in this case, Nigerian workers have freely chosen to move on so that you can preserve your NLC. Remember that it was part of your pleadings in the Court.” Continuing, Ajaero reminded Wabba that ULC was “more concerned with uniting Nigerian workers with the traditions and Ideology upon which the trade union movement is founded”. He explained: “You may not understand the centrality of this statement as it defines our emergence and our determination. We are not wholly interested in the characters and personalities involved but in ensuring that we create a platform that is continually able to protect the interest and desires of Nigerian workers and peoples. It is paradoxical though that a man who has done everything to undermine unity within the movement debasing our various traditions and truncated democratic organs in his union for purely selfish reasons would begin to preach democracy. Any man that extended his tenure in total perversion of his Union’s constitution cannot be trusted with anything talk less of democracy and that explains the conundrum which your usurpation of the Labour House has created within the movement. “We advise Ayuba to instead of embarking on a futile mission outside of his capacities and capabilities to rather concentrate on dousing the fires within his NLC which is what we think should bother him more. When our attention was drawn to this, we had truly thought that he was focusing on solving the internal schisms which his style of leadership has created for those who still share the same umbrella with him. This is our comradely advice. “Our assurance to all Nigerian workers and peoples is that we are determined to protect their interests within the context of creative and sensible engagements both with our social partners and other stakeholders. The vision which we have crafted for ourselves and the historic journey which we have embarked upon cannot be threatened by puny tantrums from the mouth of an individual who has foisted massive deprivation upon Nigerian workers and masses.”

15 year old girl in Nepal dies inside 'menstruation hut' after she's separated from community

A 15 year old girl from Gajra village in western Nepal's Achham district has died from smoke inhalation after she was separated from her community because she was menstruating and left to sleep in a menstruation hut in Nepal.
“Chhaupadi” which is the name given to the menstruation hut, is a practice in which women are banished during menstruation in Western Nepal.
During Chhaupadi, a practice that dates back hundreds of years ago, girls are kept in small huts with no doors, poor sanitation and poor ventilation and are forbidden from touching other people, livestock, fruits and plants.

According to Achham district police inspector, Badri Prasad Dhakal, 10 other girls have died in the lst 9 years from the isolation and exposure to environmental factors when left in the menstruation hut while practicing Chhaupadi.
"Deaths are usually caused by smoke inhalation, snake bites (and) lack of basic health care during menstruation," Badri Prasad said.

Read a 2011 United Nations report on the practice below;
''Girls are not allowed to drink milk or eat milk products and their access to water taps and wells is limited.
"Some in the Far West still believe that a God or Goddess may be angered if the practice is violated, which could result in a shorter life, the death of livestock or destruction of crops,"
"It is believed by some that if a woman touches fruits, they will fall before they are ripe. If she fetches water, the well will dry up."
'Girls are even banned from reading, writing or touching books during menstruation so they won't anger Saraswati, the goddess of education.

Develop your zone, don’t wait for FG, Obasanjo tells S-East govs, Ndigbo

ENUGU— Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, asked Ndigbo and their governors to take their destiny in their hands by developing the South-East geographical zone instead of waiting for the government. Obasanjo Obasanjo said there was no need for the governors to wait for the Federal Government to develop South-East when they already had the instruments already. Obasanjo noted that economy and security were two sides of the same coin, adding that none could be achieved without the other. He also asked Igbo elders to intervene in the on-going agitation for Biafra Republic to bring the situation under control. Obasanjo described the Igbo stock as unique people, saying their entrepreneurial and communal efforts were driven with the spirit of adventure. He spoke as the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu asked President Muhammadu Buhari to obey an earlier court order compelling the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. Ekweremadu further lamented that the South-East zone was not represented at the apex level of either the military or the police. On the rule of law and fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended, Ekweremadu insisted that Kanu must have his day in court and if court orders his release, he must be released. Both Obasanjo and Ekweremadu spoke, yesterday at the South East Economic and Security Summit in Enugu. Among those who attended the summit included former Secretary of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme; Chief Pascal Dozie; Mbazulike Amaechi; Ben Akabueze; Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd), among other dignitaries. President Muhammadu Buhari was expected as a guest during the summit but he neither attended nor sent any representative. Develop your zone, don’t wait for FG, Obasanjo tells S-East govs, Ndigbo According to Obasanjo, the aim of the summit was on how the industrious people of the zone could do things for themselves other than relying on government’s intervention. Obasanjo said: “Insecurity in any part of the country affects the other. The instruments of doing the jobs are already with you. “The South-East had been known from time for entrepreneurship, community effort services and their spirit of adventure. The papa Okafor has been there in my village right from when I was growing up and nobody has taken those traits away from the Igboman, but how do we use it to achieve economic prosperity and security? “You can’t have security when the economy of your people is not well taken care of and you can’t have security without economic prosperity. What we need to do here is to harness what we have. “The people of the South-East are extremely unique and need to be harnessed. We should work together and that is the purpose of this summit.” The former president told the gathering to look in the ways of their fertile agricultural land, the Aba industrial cluster, and other minerals both on the surface and beneath the earth to grow their economy. “Whatever we can do for ourselves, let us do it for ourselves. If I could go to Maiduguri when Boko Haram was raging and I had to try to reach out to them in the interest of the country, I don’t think I have to be eulogized for being part of the initiative of South-East summit. “Security is all inclusive. If there is no security in any part of the country, there is no security in the entire country. All the governors have spoken. I am delighted. They said ‘we have things we can do if given the instrument’. You have the instruments already. Obasanjo lists traits of Ndigbo “We knew South-East for enterprise, entrepreneurial ability, communal interest and spirit of adventure. Nobody can take it away from them. What can we do with it in area of economy and security? The symbiotic relationship between economy and security has been mentioned by the governors and the chairman. You cannot have good economy when the security of your people is not taken care of. If security is not taken care of, the economy will diminish. What we have, how can we use it? “The people of South-East are extremely unique. That uniqueness of the South-East must be used to your advantage,” Obasanjo said. On agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra On the agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra, Obasanjo attributed the situation to youth restiveness, caused by challenges facing the young people of the zone and asked: “But should we leave them with the agitation, should we leave them as elders? “There should be agitation by the youths but should we leave them with the agitation? There is this saying that where youths are cutting trees in the forest, the elders should caution them because they are the people who know where the tree will fall,” he addeed. Citing the Aba-made shoes and Ebonyi rice as examples, Obasanjo described the potentials of the South-East region as legendary, saying that the South-East could be the food basket of the nation. He, however, described the challenge of youth restiveness in the region as understandable as the agitators had education and skills and yet they do not have jobs. I’m not at war with Buhari In his speech, Ekweremadu stressed that he was not at war with President Muhammadu Buhari, citing recent meetings he had had with the President. Ekweremadu further called for the restructuring of the country, noting that if Nigeria’s democracy should thrive, the citizens should be ready to subject themselves to the basic rules of law. He said: “So long as we have unified economic structure, it cannot work. It is also important that all parts of the country are represented in the affairs of government. As we talk now, nobody from the South-East is among the security chiefs in Nigeria. “On human rights, the issue of liberty is an inalienable right. If court says release somebody, please do that. No matter the offence allegedly committed by Nnamdi Kanu, he should be released from detention.” The Chairman of the planning committee of the summit and former Minister of Power, Prof. Bath Nnaji, said the essence of the summit was to brainstorm on how the private sector could work with the public sector to achieve infrastructure influx into the South East. Nnaji said the areas they are looking at to work on include gas pipelines, railway, sustainable agriculture, among other areas. Anyaoku calls for restructuring of Nigeria Earlier, Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of Commonwealth and Chairman of the occasion, reiterated his call for the restructuring of Nigeria to have fewer and effective federating units for this country to have stability and faster pace of development. “There is no need for Federal Government to periodically bail out any of the 36 non-viable units from dire financial conditions,” he said.

Unpaid gratuities, pensions: 32 retired judges drag governor, A-G to court

Thirty-two retired judges, including five retired state Chief Judges in Anambra State, led by Justice Godwin Ononiba (retd), have dragged Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Awka for non-payment of their severance gratuity, upward review of pensions, arrears of housing allowances and overall welfare. Also joined in the suit tagged complaint No: NICN/Awk/43/2016 filed by their lawyer, Gabriel Udoka Moneke is the Attorney-General of Anambra State. The action of the retired judges drew the praises of some senior lawyers, including Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, Yusuf Ali, SAN, Femi Falana, SAN, and others, who commended them for using the instrumentality of the law to fight their cause. The development came on a day 126 former supervisors, who served in the various local government areas of Anambra State until their dissolution in August this year, demanded a severance package of N1.2 billion from Governor Willie Obiano. Of the 32 retired judges, 13 of them are dead, while 19 are still alive, including five former chief judges. WILLIE OBIANO The former retired chief judges are G.U. Ononiba, C.J. Okoli, Nri-Ezedi, E.A. Nzegwu, and P.A.C Obidigwe who were members of the Association of Retired Judges of Anambra State. Part of the suit read: “You are hereby commanded that within fourteen days after the service of this complaint on you, inclusive of the day of such service, you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in an action at the suit of  HON. JUSTICE G.U. ONONIBA C.J. (Rtd) & 31 Ors, and take note that in default of your so doing, the claimants may proceed therein, and judgement may be given in your absence. The claimants are praying the court for:  “A declaration that each of the 1st-19th claimants and each of the estates of the 20th  to 2nd claimants are entitled to be paid severance gratuities based on 300% of each claimant’s annual basic salary while in active service. “A declaration that each of the 1st  to 19th claimants and each of the estates of the 20th to 32nd claimants are entitled to be paid housing allowances per annum and in the tune of 200% of each claimant’s annual basic salary. “A declaration that the 1st defendant does not have the power to amend, alter or vary the provisions of an Act of the National Assembly and in particular the “certain political, public and judicial office holders (salaries and allowances, etc) (Amendment) Act No. 1 of 2008 which took effect from 1st February, 2007” “A declaration that each of the 1st – 19th claimants and each of estates of the 20th to 32nd claimants is entitled to an upward review of each of the claimant’s pension in line with Section 210(3) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “An order of court directing the defendants to pay to the 1st-19th claimants and the estates of 20th-32nd claimants forthwith their severance gratuities, based on 300% of annual basic salary of each of the claimants while in active service. “An order of court directing the defendants to pay the 1st-19th  claimants and the estates of the 20th  to 32nd  claimants forthwith the arrears of their housing allowances based on 200% of their annual basic salary. “An order of court directing the defendants to recompute the pensions and gratuities of the claimants based on 200% of their annual basic salaries as housing allowance. “An order of court directing the defendants to pay to the claimants the arrears of their respective pension and gratuities from the withheld 100% of their annual basic salary as housing allowance. “An order of court directing the defendants to pay to each of the 1st-19th claimants and the estates of the 20th to 32nd claimants all the balance and arrears of their pensions which would have accrued to them had the pensions been reviewed upward in line with the provision of the constitution and the directives of the salaries and wages commission.” The retired judges (claimants) stated that they had at different times meritoriously and successfully served as judges of the Anambra State High Court and Customary Court of Appeal but were  forgotten and abandoned without payment of their due benefits, allowances and entitlements. The Association of the Retired Judges was formed pursuant to the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria in a letter addressed to all judges, dated July, 10, 2010. The claimants averred  that they had on May, 5, 2016, issued and served on the defendants, through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, and the office of the 2nd defendant respectively, the three months mandatory notice of intention to institute the legal action against them, adding that no response came from them. Reactions Ozekhome Reacting to the development, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said:  “This is a good omen. For the first time in the history of this country, judges can pick up courage to drag a government to court over unpaid gratuities and pension. It is a shame that such senior citizens had to resort to the court to get their constitutional right. “It is also a shame they can be subjected to this kind of treatment over pensions and gratuities. Before now, they could not talk while they were in service and with their action, they are also speaking for serving judges.” Falana Femi Falana, SAN, said:  “The legal action is in order. The government cannot successfully fight judicial corruption if retired judges are owed pension for months. “You are simply telling serving judges to take care of the raining day by engaging in corrupt practices. The Anambra State Government and others involved in the illegality should pay the outstanding pension of retired judges.” Yusuf Ali, SAN Ali said:  “Yes, what they have done is right, except you want them to take laws into their hands, which expectedly they won’t do. These are the people who have worked and are getting old. Do you want them to die before enjoying the fruits of their labour? It is sad. For me, what government is doing in this clime is unexpected, if it is true. We only wish they pay them and not allow them to wait for court judgment before receiving their pension.” Otteh Joseph Otteh, Executive Director,  Access to Justice, said:  “No one should be owed pension, whether judges, doctors or messengers. This situation shows that anyone can be a victim of government’s neglect and failings. But this can have a serious, predictable effect on judicial independence as some judges might feel they need to stack up money during service for raining days of lack. Anambra State government should immediately pay up all retirees their entitlements.” In its reaction, the National Judicial Council, NJC, yesterday, said it only had the mandate to pay pension to retired federal judicial officers. Though the Council explained that such judges were entitled to receive their benefits from the state government, it, however, declined to officially react to the development, stressing that it would amount to sub-judice since the case was already in court. A top source at the NJC, who pleaded anonymity, said:  “We have paid salaries of all judges in the country serving in federal courts. “Likewise, when they retire, we only pay pension to those that were in federal courts. So it is the state that is responsible for the payment of pension of judges that served under them. “Meanwhile since the matter is already in court. I think it will be better to allow the court to make the interpretation. I cannot say anything more on the issue as such action will be sub-judice.” Ex LG supervisors demand N1.2b severance package Meanwhile, 126 former supervisors, who served in the various local government areas of Anambra State until their dissolution in August this year, have demanded a severance package of N1.2 billion from Governor Willie Obiano. The former supervisors were appointed by their elected local government chairmen as provided under Section 72 of the Anambra State House of Assembly Law, 2012. In a letter addressed to the governor after their meeting in Awka, yesterday, the ex supervisors threatened to drag the secretary of the state Joint Action Committee, JAC, Mr. Tony Oli, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly misappropriating funds meant for the payment of their severance allowances. Oli could not be reached at press time, but the ex supervisors said he told them when they visited his office that he had no business with them. The letter was signed by the chairman of the ex supervisors’ forum, Mr. Chijioke Eruchalu, the secretary, Mr. Cliff Nneli and the coordinator, Mr. Cajethan Okafor. The letter read in part: “In view of this, we therefore plead with you to redress all the anomalies. We believe that as our father, we will get a favourable response so that we won’t feel left out and abandoned after serving our state diligently, in spite of the hard times.”

Why I retired from football – Okocha

Austin Jay Jay Okocha has attributed his decision to retire early from active football to lack of enough playing time. The ex-Nigeria international who dazzled the footballing world with his sizzling skills and breathtaking performances made the shock decision to leave the game in 2008. According to the Olympic Gold medallist, reduced minutes on the pitch of play triggered his exile from the round leather game, at the age of 34. Okocha “I must confess that not getting a lot of playing time was the main reason why I retired from playing at a very young age,” Okocha told media men at a press conference organised by Star Times. “I believe that it is not worth it to train from Monday to Friday just to have 20 minutes on the pitch or sit on the bench on Saturday. I am very competitive.” The midfielder who last represented Nigeria in 2006, appeared for the Super Eagles 75 times with 14 goals to his name.

Cleric impregnates 16-yr-old daughter

Akure—A 16-year-old girl (names withheld) is allegedly carrying a seven-month-old pregnancy for her 56 years old father, Prophet Taiwo Oluboyode, in Odode, Idanre area of Ondo State. Vanguard gathered that the suspect, who owns a white garment church and currently in police custody, allegedly informed his interrogators that he was tempted by the devil to commit the act. Prophet Taiwo Oluboyode However, people in the agrarian community, who spoke with Vanguard, are of the opinion that the cleric must have carried out the act “to renew his spiritual power.” Findings in the town showed that the cleric is popular and his church, located at Oke-Ijebu Street, Odode, Idanre, always records high traffic of miracle-seeking worshippers from far and near on a regular basis. Sources close to the church revealed that the prophet is a specialist in bathing women in streams to ward off evil spirits and those tormented by spiritual husbands, who prevent them from getting married or having babies. Reports had it that the prophet lives alone with her daughter after the wife left him years back. It was learned that efforts by the estranged wife to take her daughter along with her were rebuffed by the suspect, who insisted he needed her around to run errands and take care of him in the interim. A family source hinted that the suspect had refused to remarry after the wife left and had preferred sleeping with his daughter instead. It was unclear if the victim raised any alarm over her defilement by her father, but neighbours said that the girl was always keeping to herself. Vanguard learned that the victim stopped going to school when signs that she is pregnant was becoming evident. Her school mates, who came to the house to ask after her, were informed by the father that she had travelled to Lagos to continue her studies. It was gathered from police source that when the victim took in and informed the suspect, he allegedly gave her some concoctions to terminate the pregnancy. The attempt, it was learned, failed. The suspect, according to a source, contemplated smuggling the victim out of the house to a private clinic, but she refused and threatened to raise alarm. The suspect then instructed the victim to stay indoors to avoid suspicion from church members and their neighbours. It was revealed that one of the neighbours, who saw the girl with a protruding stomach, raised the alarm. Police laid ambush and arrested the suspect when he returned home. Detectives informed Vanguard that the only words uttered by the suspect was “it was temptation and the work of the devil.” The church is presently under lock and key, ýwhile other leaders and members of the church have gone underground for fear of arrest. Police spokesperson, Femi Joseph, promised to get the details from the DPO in Idanre, but had not done so at press time. However, police detectives at Ala Police Station in Akure, confirmed that the cleric had been arrested and would soon be prosecuted.

THE Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS), yesterday uncovered several bags of the much dreaded plastic rice. Disclosing this in Lagos, Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’, Ikeja; Comptroller Haruna Mamudu said the unit seized no fewer than 102 bags of the plastic rice at a warehouse in Ikeja. The bags of plastic which has been packaged for sale during the yuletide were to be evacuated before operatives of the swooped on the managers of the warehouse. Coincidentally, it was the same man who denied the presence of plastic rice when he was confronted by reporters precisely one week ago at the FOU office in Ikeja. According to Mamudu, the imported rice, which was branded as ‘best tomato’, had no manufacture, expiry date and NAFDAC registration number. MMM: Depositors optimistic of getting trapped funds

LAGOS— DESPITE being left heartbroken by the one month freezing of accounts of participants of Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox, MMM, most investors in the money-doubling scheme are  hopeful of getting their trapped funds when the scheme eventually resumes. Vanguard observed that the optimistic disposition of affected participants was only informed by the reasons adduced for the development by the management of MMM. Notwithstanding, most participants, who spoke to Vanguard in Lagos yesterday, were still in a state of shock, as they regretted being taken unaware by the turn of events. While many certainly believed that MMM would resume operations on January 12, 2017, as promised by its management, a few were doubtful of getting their trapped investment, citing the fate of South Africans, who had a similar experience. Amid this uneasy calm, there are fears that those who invested huge funds may resort to suicidal reactions since they relied on the expected bonus to meet their economic needs amid the current hardship in Nigeria. Speaking to Vanguard, a Lagos-based business woman, who pleaded anonymity, said:  “I am yet to believe that MMM has crashed.  It did not crash, people only misunderstood what the management is doing. It is in our interest. “But I am scared, because no one is sure of what will happen if it eventually resumes. I have a huge amount of money in the scheme. I am hopeful but not too sure of what might happen because I have read about the plight of South Africans, whose money was not refunded at the end of this kind of incident.” mmm On his part, Mr. Chukwujekwu Mouneke, who owns an electronics shop in Alaba International Market, said: “MMM has not crashed; it is only on a break from December 12 to January 12 for data upgrading and a few other features for the benefit of participants. ‘’The media is doing more harm than good. If people can wait for 30 days to collect 30 percent, what stops them from having patience for system upgrading? After all, APC administration finds it difficult paying salaries as at when due.” Guider, Super-Guiders hold meeting to reduce panic Meanwhile, further inquiries revealed that to reduce the panic in the system, some leading members of the scheme, known as guiders and super-guiders convened a meeting yesterday. At the forum which was held on a social media video conferencing virtual platform, Zoom, yesterday at 9 am, certain decisions were taken to ensure the scheme comes back to retain participants’ confidence. The agreed measures sighted by Vanguard read: “Programmers are working to implement a new model of our platform. One objective of this new model would be to prevent massive GH(Get Help) at any particular point in time. “New model will be explained to all after its implementation, not before.  Programmers are pushing to implement it in less that a month. So the freezing of Mavros might not last up to a month. No promises.  A notification/clarification of our current situation would be put on POs ‘probably’ before the end of the week. “Releasing Mavros in batches would be taken into consideration. Encourage downlines not to panic. What is being done is for all our benefits.  Change of guider button for all ordinary participants would be put on participants PO next week. “MMM news update would commence this week on all POs. Mavros will grow on a daily basis during the freeze. Just that the dispersion process (creation of PH and GH orders) is put on hold for now. This period would be used  to handle all problems currently on the table.”

Rivers Re-run: Wike Would Have Gone Had PDP Lost — Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has explained the fight of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in the just concluded re-run elections.

Okorocha told journalists in Owerri yesterday that Wike did all he could to secure his office by making sure that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won majority of the senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats in the state.

He also appreciated that it was not easy to defeat an incumbent governor because he would do all he could to remain in power.

He said: “If the governor did not do that to make sure he has majority of state and National Assembly members, he would have gone”.

Speaking on the just concluded governorship elections which went in favour of the APC, Okorocha described it as a testimony that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was doing well.

He said the APC would take over the governorship in Anambra State in 2017, adding that “Anambra State needs APC governor to succeed”.

Meanwhile, Governor Okorocha has assured the executives and members of the Abia State chapter of the APC of the support of his administration as they prepare for the forthcoming local government elections.

Speaking during a meeting with the members of the APC in Umuahia, Okorocha said the party would take over the government house in the state and urged them to remain steadfast if they wished to succeed.

Okorocha, who was represented by a member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Max Odunze, said the state would be a better place if the APC took control in 2019.

Items recovered from them included one AK-47 rifle, one assault rifle, six magazines, 112 rounds of live ammunition, a green INEC-branded bag, eight booklets of ballot papers for Emohua Local Government Area, one booklet of INEC accreditation incident report forms, one booklet of statement of results and one blood-stained All Progressives Congress, APC, agent identity card. Awunah said Nwaerema, 33, claimed he was hired by the youth leader of a community and eight others from a neighbouring state. He said they invaded Emouha Local Government Area and carted away electoral materials meant for polling units within the area, adding that others, who participated in the crime, were at large. “Intelligence reports confirmed that the materials were taken to a government facility and escorted by armed personnel,” he said. The police spokesman disclosed that Deipiribo, Alalibo, Warmate and Stephen, said they were engaged by a lawmaker (names withheld), who procured two AK-47 rifles and commissioned his driver to convey the weapons. He said the suspects were responsible for several attacks that took place during elections in Abonnema, Emuoha, Elele, Etche and Omoku. The spokesman said that a high-powered investigative panel was looking into the misconduct of some security personnel during the re-run elections in Rivers. While noting that the suspects would be prosecuted after investigation was concluded, Awunah said: “The police will decisively deal with anybody involved irrespective of status or political affiliation.”

I’m not affected by recession— Stan Ekeh

Owerri— Chairman of Zinox Group, Mr. Leo Stan Ekeh yesterday said that lack of humility has remained a very big obstacle among young Igbo people. He made this statement during a youth entrepreneurship workshop held at the Imo state University, IMSU, auditorium. According to him, “There is a reason why young people in Igbo land do not grow. One is lack of humility. You see a boy who has N20,000 and he wants a professor to stand up for him. Let me tell you, if you are humble, God will promote you. You have to delete some things that are not relevant to your life and move forward. “You cannot be negative and be successful. You must be positive to get something positive. This is the problem of an Igbo man”, adding that,“ most Igbo men are technically not rich.” Ekeh said that the current recession does not affect him because he was prepared for it, adding that, “I am not afraid of the recession and I am not affected. I do not have a god father. I use my knowledge to succeed.” While advising young people doing business, he said: “ I must tell you, as a young man who is in business, have it at the back of your mind that when you are in business, you must lose money to make money.'”

Death in NYSC Camp: My daughter nursed no ailment – Father of deceased

Osogbo— Mr. Olawale Oladepo, a retired Sanitary Inspector and the father of late Ifedolapo Oladepo, a youth corps member, who died in Kano while undergoing orientation at the National Youth Service Camp, NYSC camp, insisted that the untimely death of his daughter was allegedly caused by negligence of the NYSC. Late Ifedolapo Oladepo According to him, Dolapo nursed no ailment before she departed home for Kano at about 6am on Thursday, November 24, and called at regular intervals along the journey till she got to Kano around 1:00am the following day and headed straight for the NYSC Orientation Camp with two other friends. He wondered how a person, who participated actively and appeared so radiant in all the pictures she sent home could, according to the medical certificate of the cause of her death issued by Gwazo General Hospital have died of kidney infection. He attributed the death to negligence and lackadaisical attitude of the NYSC, adding that the Corps should come out with a vivid account of what happened to his daughter between 8:00am on Monday that she reported to the camp clinic and the time she passed on at 4:am the second morning. “The death certificate issued by the Gwazo General Hospital, Kano said she had sepsis that led to kidney infection. I wonder if truly she had kidney infection, did the camp have proper medical facilities to have kept her, and why taking her to the General Hospital with no facilities to treat such ailments?” Conditions for exhuming the body The father of Ifedolapo Oladepo, the corps member from Osun State who died recently at the camp of the National Youth Service Corps in Kano State, Mr. Olawale Oladepo, has said that the Federal Government must meet certain conditions before the family would allow the remains of her daughter to be exhumed for post-mortem autopsy. President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered an independent investigation into the controversial death of the 26-year-old first class graduate in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho. To this end, the Minister for Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung, had said that Ifedolapo’s remains would be exhumed for autopsy. The family also said they have never been in any communication with anyone on the matter. The family contended that it will only consider such option after all avenues such as listening to the preceding conversations of Dolapo through communication network had been explored. Addressing newsmen in Osogbo yesterday, the father of the deceased, Mr Olawale Oladepo asked the Federal Government to explore all avenues, including the conversations of the deceased with members of the family before her death. Mr Oladepo, accompanied by other members of the family and concerned friends of the deceased, gave graphic account of what transpired between his daughter and other members of the family before her death. He also urged President Muhammad Buhari to caution the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Comrade Solomon Dalung against making inflammatory statement that could further aggravate the agony of parents and family members over the untimely death of Dolapo. The Minister, who was said to have exonerated the NYSC of culpability in the death of Ifedolapo was said to have given an indication that the remains of Ifedolapo will be exhumed for autopsy to confirm the cause of the death while in NYSC orientation camp. While appreciating the efforts of President Muhammad Buhari at making sure a reliable investigation is conducted into the circumstances that led to the death of his daughter, Mr Oladepo pledged his cooperation with the panel. He also appreciated the Governor of Osun State, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, members of the National Assembly, members of the Osun State House of Assembly and the media for their interest in the circumstances that led to the death of his daughter. Corps member father’s account According to the late corps member’s father; ‘’Dolapo nursed no ailment. She was always hale and hearty. I took her to the motor park to board a bus bound for Kano and the bus departed at 6am on Thursday November 24. ‘’After a brief father-daughter talk at the park, the bus departed at 9am. She called at regular intervals along the journey till she got to Kano around 1am the following morning. ‘’At dawn of 25th, she headed straight for the NYSC Orientation Camp with two other friends she journeyed with from Osogbo. ‘’After much ordeals of registering at the camp, she called me in the afternoon to keep me abreast of developments. ‘’At 6:30am the following morning (Saturday, 26th November, 2016), she called again as usual. She reported that they were woken up by 4am and that they had finished the morning drill after which they would go for another parade and the opening ceremony later. ‘’On that Saturday, she sent home all the pictures taken with funfair with some of her friends and she looked hale and hearty that day according to the pictures as she participated in all the activities of the day. ‘’I now wonder if a person who had kidney infection as claimed by the NYSC could participate and be so radiant in all the pictures she sent. ‘’On Saturday, 27th, she reported there were no activities. Her mother even called her that Sunday to send her NYSC state code number and she did not complain of any ailment. It was on Monday she called her elder sister complaining that she felt sick and was not being attended to because they thought she was trying to avoid the day’s drill. ‘’The sister started conversations with the medical personnel on duty and begged them to attend to her. The sister’s battery went flat so she called an uncle who is a consultant. The uncle asked what she was given, they told him Placebo. ‘’After some persuasion, they agreed to give her medications. Some times later, when her sister’s phone came on, she told her they administered some drugs on her and shortly after, her speech slurred, the tongue twisted and she could not talk properly. ‘’There were visible patches of blood under her skin and rashes all over her body. She took the picture of the hand to testify to this and she sent it home. When her sister called again, the medical personnel on duty told her she reacted to the drugs given and that they had given her hydro cortisone to counter the reactions and that after one hour, if her situation did not improve, they would transfer her to a teaching hospital after much plea from the sister asking them to transfer her to the teaching hospital. ‘’The battery of the deceased phone later went off. When the younger sister called her around 4pm of that same day, she answered the phone but complaining she has not been taken to any health institution requesting that we should come by air to take her back home. ‘’It was then the sister called Ilorin and when they said the plane had departed and another wouldn’t be available till Wednesday, she travelled to Ibadan to catch the night bus to Kano. It was on their way that the sister was called around 4am on Tuesday, that she had passed on. Request for NYSC’s story ‘’My request to NYSC is to give the family and the entire world a vivid account of what happened to my daughter between 8am on Monday that she reported to the camp clinic and the time she passed on at 4am the second morning as reported by them. ‘’The doctor on duty at the Gwazo General Hospital, Kano said she had Sepsis that led to kidney infection. I wonder if truly she had kidney infection, did the Camp have proper medical facilities to have kept her; and why taking her to the General Hospital with no facilities to treat such ailments? ‘’Hence, by implication, whatever ailment may have developed when she got to camp could not have resulted to death if she had been promptly attended to and taken care of. However, she died out of negligence and lackadaisical attitude of the NYSC ‘’Lest I forget, the NYSC may now tell me what the relationship is between the second hand knickers she was alleged to have worn, the rashes on her body, the twisted tongue, the blood patches on her skin, the fingers and toes that turned black, the slurred speech and the kidney infection that they claimed she had. ‘’Until they give answers to these questions, we have little to talk about. This is not in a way to indict anybody but to bring out the truth of the whole scenario. ‘’Apparently, she was not taken to any tertiary hospital until she died, according to the medical certificate of the cause of death issued by Gwazo General Hospital and I quote; “She died as I’m aware or informed on the 29th of November, 2016 at 4am and that the cause of death was Septic shock and kidney injury”. According to the father; ‘’I’m worried about this report that she had Urinary Tract Infection leading to kidney injury. Thus, I wish to state for the umpteenth time that the cause of death as claimed by NYSC is simply contradictory! ‘’May I also recall that as she conversed with me and the sister the twisted tongue showed because her speech was slurred. We have strong cause to believe their accounts were mere fabrications. ‘’People don’t mind calling white black just to cover up. All we are saying is, the NYSC negligence sent our daughter to her early grave.’’

Rivers rerun: PDP, APC dispute polls result

PORT HARCOURT—The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, released more results of the three senatorial, eight House of Representatives and 10 state House of Assembly re-run elections held in Rivers State. ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads Amaechi and Wike With the results announced, yesterday, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, won the Rivers East and Rivers West senatorial seats through Senator George Sekibo and Osinachukwu Ideozu. Senator Magnus Abe of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had earlier been declared as the winner of Rivers South-East senatorial seat. This came as the APC rejected the result of Rivers-East senatorial re-run and the PDP also rejecting that of Rivers South-East senatorial district won by the APC. The results were announced after Governor Nyesom Wike led hundreds of PDP members to the INEC office in Port Harcourt, protesting the electoral umpire’s delay in releasing the results. The PDP called for the immediate release of all the results alleging that INEC was withholding them to allow APC manipulate the results. In a statement issued in Abuja, the spokesman of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the party was in possession of all the results as announced at the polling units and that it was clear the PDP had won. The party also rejected the declaration of Magnus Abe as the winner of Rivers South East Senatorial District, saying no election was held in the area.” How Sekibo reclaimed Rivers-East senatorial seat Senator George Sekibo, who had in 2015 won the Rivers East senatorial district seat that was nullified by the courts, yesterday, retained the seat. Professor Orji Okumenkama, the returning officer for the Rivers East district declared the result at Port Harcourt City Local Government Area Sekibo with 93,098 votes defeated his rival, Chief Andrew Uchendu of the APC, who polled 34,193 votes. Senator Sekibo has commended the doggedness of his supporters, saying they stood to defend their votes. The supporters and candidates of the PDP had taken over the premises of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area due to alleged delay in release of the results. Governor Wike led hundreds of PDP members including His Chief of Staff, Mr. Emeka Woke; the Attorney General of the State, Emma Aguma; Uche Secondus and Chief Sergeant Awuse to the scene to ensure that the results collated were announced. Security men, who came with the governor, shot sporadically into the air, causing panic in the area before the results were announced. At the Government House, while addressing the supporters, who were on ground when the result was announced, Wike vowed that intimidation would not happen in the state in any future election. Wike thanked the supporters for their resilience, noting that their efforts would not be forgotten. “I thank God for the strength and courage he has given to us in this election. We have really sacrificed. I know that freedom comes with sacrifice. Rivers people were murdered for just a simple legislative election. The Federal Government came with their might to conquer Rivers State, just because they want to win. They killed people because they want the state. The blood of those people they killed will be on their heads. States that cannot pay their workers’ salary and cannot carry out meaningful project in their states, brought money to rig election in this state. “They should be ashamed because they won one but we won two of the senatorial seats. They fought but God said, no way. Do not be intimidated. This will never happen in 2019. They have shown us that there is no democracy in Nigeria. If not, why not conduct election the way it is done in other countries?” The PDP candidate, Randolf Brown has also been declared winner of the Degema/Bonny federal constituency in a result announced by Professor S.O. Eze. In Asari Toru LGA, the PDP won the two state constituency seats. How Ideozu won in Rivers West INEC also declared PDP’s Osinachukwu Ideozu as the winner of the of the Rivers West senatorial district election. He scored 107,166 votes to defeat Otelemaba Amachree of the APC, who garnered 48,898 votes. APC rejects Rivers East result Meantime, the APC has rejected the Senatorial result for Rivers East, saying it did not reflect the reported true position of votes cast. Deputy Leader of the party, Dr Dakuku Peterside and Director General, NIMASA who addressed the press at the party’s state secretariat in Port Harcourt, alleged that INEC announced the results without including the one from Emohua local government area.
