Satchie Emmanuel Etoromi: "Return My Son’s Body For Proper Burial, Stella Oduah"

Ex-husband of Senator Stella Oduah, Lt-Col. Satchie Emmanuel Etoromi (rtd.) pleaded on Wednesday with the ex-Aviation Minister to return the body of his late son, Maxwell Chinedu Toritseju Etoromi, for proper burial in Warri, Delta State.

Cief Etoromi, who spoke with journalists in Warri shortly after sending a powerful delegation to his royal majesty, Igwe D. O. Oduah, the Igwe of Akili Ozizor, Ogbaru in Anambra State, expressed sadness over the death of his son and how he was treated by the Senator.

In his letter to the royal father titled, “Appeal To Intercede to Ensure Senator Stella Adaeze Oduah Brings My Son, Maxwell Chinedu Obiechina Wereyesigha Toritseju Etoromi To Me In Warri For Burial,” the bereaved father said he read about the death of their 28 years old son in the newspapers without being informed by his ex-wife.

“His Royal Highness Igwe Oduah 1 betrothed Stella Oduah to me on 18th November 1984 in Akili Ozizor. We married on the 16th of December 1984 in His Highness`s Palace in Akili Ozizor. After the payment of dowry and exchange of gifts, we were taken to Nde-Mili where we performed the final rites.

“I am surprised to see in the internet stories that my son Maxwell Omabuwa Temisanre Obiechina Wereyesigha Toritseju Chinedu Etoromi who Stella delivered for us on 14th March 1988 at 05.00 hour in St Mary`s Hospital Ugboroke Warri is dead”, the bereaved father said in the letter.

He alleged that up till now, his enstranged wife had not contacted him on the death of their son only for her to commence preparation to bury him last Friday in her home town.

“Up till now Stella has not told me my son died in her custody. There is rumour that my son will be buried in Akili Ozizor. That is not acceptable at all. My son must be brought to me in Warri for internment”, he lamented.

In the letter which was copied to Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, The Arch-Bishop of Onitsha, and the Parish Priest, Father, Donald Uzoh of Sacred Heart Parish, the bereaved father insisted that his late son must be returned for proper burial in his father’s place.

Chief Etoromi explained to the monarch that the stories needed not be told now, but his grief at Omabuwa`s transition was too much to bear, hence he is is reacting this way.

It would be recalled that Akili Ozizor, the quiet country home of Nigeria’s former Aviation minister and presently the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone,Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah, last Monday witnessed an unusual heavy vehicular and human movement when sympathisers, friends and dignitaries from across Anambra state rallied for vigil mass for the peaceful repose of the soul of late master Maxwell Chinedu, son of Senator Oduah who died last Friday at the age of 28.

Sacked Samuel Nlend Arrives Cameroon with AIDS

Samuel Nlend, 21, is back in Cameroon, after being sacked by an Egyptian football club, Al Ittihad, for allegedly testing HIV positive during the club's standard medical test routine.

The 21-year-old footballer's friends, teammates and fans came out in their numbers to welcome him back home. Cameroonians are reeling in anger and have called for the club to be sued for violating Samuel's right to privacy by making his HIV test results public.

Nlend, is regarded as one of Cameroon’s brightest soccer prospects. He finished the last Cameroonian soccer league season as the top scorer with his former club, Union Douala. He also played and scored for the Cameroonian senior team at the African Nations Championship in Rwanda earlier this year.

Forex market: CBN reinstates 9 suspended banks

ABUJA — The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has reinstated the nine banks recently suspended from the foreign exchange market. They were suspended for allegedly failing to remit about $ 2.3 billion fund of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to the Treasury Single Account, TSA, of the federal government. The CBN Director of Banking Supervision, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, who announced the reinstatement in Abuja, yesterday, explained that the apex bank took the decision after the banks presented repayments plans.According to her, the CBN and the Body of Banks Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have met several times after the suspension of the nine banks, and eventually agreed to reinstate the affected banks after the CBN was satisfied with the banks’ repayment plans. Mrs. Martins said: “You will recall that a while ago, a number of banks were suspended from the foreign exchange market and since then, I have received some inquiries, some of you have sent me text messages asking what is going on. “Well, we had engagements with the body of CEOs and they have been interacting among themselves and I am happy to tell you that the banks that were banned are being released from the ban. “And the reason is because all the banks, after discussions and engagements under the auspices of the Body of CEOs at the Chartered Institute of Bankers, CIBN, submitted creditable repayment plans which the CBN considered acceptable. “So, as a result of that, all those banks have been reinstated in the foreign exchange market.” In his remarks, President of  CIBN, Prof. Segun Ajibola, said  the organization had to intervene in the issue because the outcome would affect the entire industry. He said: “The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria is very much interested in what is happening among all the players now.”

Economic recession: PDP calls for President Buhari's resignation

Opposition party PDP has called for the resignation of President Buhari following the new statistics released Wednesday by the National Bureau of Statistics, indicating that Nigeria is currently experiencing economic recession. The party made the call in a statement released today. Part of the statement reads:

'Nothing better showcases the absolute ineptitude and incompetence of the Muhammadu Buhari administration than the GDP, Inflation and unemployment figures released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics today.
These figures reveal what we have repeatedly said over the last 15 months , President Buhari is destroying the Nigerian economy.
For the avoidance of doubt, some of these figures include: GDP contracted by -2.06% in Q2 2016. In contrast, the economy grew by 2.35% in Q2 2015. This was worse than -0.36% in Q1 2016. Headline Inflation for July 2016 stands at 17.1%. It was 16.5% in June 2016. Food inflation was 15.58% for July 2016 from 15.3% in June 2016. Portfolio investment declined to $245.3m in Q2 2016. This is a 9.5% from $271.0m in Q1 2016 & is a far cry from $2.81bn in Q2 2015. FDI declined from $211.1m in Q2 2015 and $174.4m in Q1 2016 to an estimated $133.0m in Q2 2016. Total value of capital imported in Q2 2016 is estimated at mere $647.1m.
This is the lowest quarterly figure since Nigeria started keeping records of capital importation. It is a decline from $710.9 m in Q1 2016 & a far cry from $2.67bn in Q2 2015. A total of 4,580,602 people have lost their jobs since May 29, 2015. The number of persons in full time employment decreased by 351,350 in Q2 2016 compared to Q1 2016.
The result of these indices is that Nigeria is in its worst economic state for 29 years – dating back to 1987 when the nation had to take harsh steps to recover from President Buhari's policies of 1984-85. As with 1984-85, companies are fleeing our shores in droves.
Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) recently stated that more than 272 companies have shut down in the past 1 year. Furthermore, like we suffered in 1984-85, we are suffering a brain drain where our best & brightest talents are leaving the country in search of a better life elsewhere.
It is disheartening that the Buhari administration is destroying the Nigerian economy & our collective future by the implementation of his archaic & incoherent economic policies which failed in 1984-85 & are failing spectacularly now. Our dismay is made worse by the fact that every sphere of the Nigerian socio-political space (ranging from the conduct of elections human rights, respect for the rule of law, security, technology, health etc) is negatively affected by Buhari's government.
We join all well meaning Nigerians to call on Buhari to resign if he is unable to reverse the economic decline he has brought on us. May God bless Nigeria, especially in these very difficult times".

“As we talk, the food we consume in the state like rice, yam, tomatoes, pepper, and livestock all come from the north.

We’ll protest naked to summon wrath of gods against FG, gas company over oil spillage – A’Ibom women

NSIT IBOM- WOMEN of Obotim Nsit community, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa-Ibom State have vowed to protest nude to summon the wrath of the gods against government and a gas company whose pipeline was blown up in the community by the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, July 24, for allegedly abandoning them to their fate after the destructive incident. They claimed that the explosion caused extensive damage to all the houses in the village besides ruining their farmlands and other means of livelihood, only for the company, working for the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, which constructed the pipeline, to simply evacuate its equipment after the incident and leave. However, NDA, penultimate week, declared an unannounced ceasefire following the appeal by monarchs, leaders and stakeholders of the Niger Delta coastal states on militants to sheathe their swords. In response to an earlier inquiry on the complaints by communities about the effects of their attacks on the environment, spokesperson of the militant group, self-styled Brig Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, empathized with the people, but said it was an unavoidable corollary they would have to bear in the spirit of the struggle to liberate them. 2000 houses under threat Head of the host community, where the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, gas pipeline control valve is located, Eteidung Okon Aaron Ukpong, told Niger Delta Voice, NDV, that the explosion destroyed nearly 2000 houses in the community. Besides shattering the villagers’ means of livelihood, he said the people have become susceptible to untold danger and insecurity, as their homes now stand on shaky foundations with the roofing sheets weakened by harmful chemical effects of the gas emissions. Our anger against gas firm, govt- Nkanta, women leader Women Leader of the community, Mrs. Dorothy Nkanta, who corroborated the claims of the village head, was aghast at the alleged lack of concern of their plight showed by government and Seven Energy Gas Company before and after the explosion. Stressing that the explosion destroyed their cassava farms, oil palm and other economic trees, Nkanta lamented: “Unfortunately, Seven Energy came and evacuated their equipment from the site not minding the losses the community have recorded. “That means that they do not care about the disaster they have brought to us after taking our land to lay their pipeline and locate their control valve. They are not bothered about the health hazards and general calamity the emissions from their pipeline have brought to our land. “What have they said is our offence for giving our land out for them to do business? Is this the kind of reward we should receive from government and the gas company for the good thing we did for them”? Stripped protest Her words: “But I want to warn that they should not provoke us to go naked on the streets for them else, it will not be well with them. “We need compensation for the losses we have recorded as a result of that gas pipeline explosion and for the degradation of our land since that gas pipeline control valve was installed at the Asang Community High School, else, we will go naked on the streets to provoke the gods of our land to action against these people, who have suddenly turned our enemies.” Problem started since 2008 The village head, Ukpong,    added: “The people’s worry is that while they were all along trying to contend with the health hazards they were subjected to by the chemical emissions from the gas pipeline since it was installed in 2008, the explosion of July 24, 2016 has come to worsen things for them by completely destroying their means of livelihood and shelter, even as the state and federal governments and Seven Energy Gas Company managing the pipeline have showed no concern for the plight of the people.” Before the explosion, he said since 2008 when the company laid the pipeline, the people no longer record good yields from their farm lands due to harmful chemical discharges from the pipelines into the soil. He confirmed that Seven Energy Gas Company, the outfit in-charge of the gas pipeline for the NNPC, indeed, came to evacuate its equipment after the explosion not minding the havoc the explosion had caused the community in terms of devastation of farmlands, lives and people’s houses. “We thought initially that the laying of the gas pipeline control valve at Asang was a blessing, only for it to become a curse to the community,. “Since 2008 that the gas pipeline control valve was located at Asang Community High School, Obotim Nsit, our people started having health challenges due to harmful chemical emissions from the pipeline just as our sources of drinking water got destroyed. “Besides, our farmlands have become degraded and no longer record good yields as a result of harmful chemical spills on the land. Even the roofs on our houses no longer last beyond one year because of leakages caused by harmful effect of chemicals from the gas pipeline. “And now, the explosion, which occurred on July 24, 2016, has come to cause complete destruction of our farms, our houses and investments and the attitude of government towards us after we recorded the magnitude of losses, is an indication that the location of the gas pipeline control valve and the gas pipeline passing through our community generally, is a curse rather than a blessing”, the Eteidung insisted. He, therefore, urged both the state and federal governments to send their agencies to assess the magnitude of distress the pipeline explosion has brought to the people of the community with a view to compensating them.

Enugu herdsmen attack: Another victim dies in hospital

ENUGU—another victim of the last Thursday’s dawn attack by herdsmen on Ndiagu, Attaukwu in Akagbe-Ukwu community, Nkanu-West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Mrs. Ifeoma Agbo, yesterday died at the Mother of Christ Hospital, Enugu, Enugu State. Armed Fulani-herdsmen Mrs. Agbo was the mother-in-law, of the six-month pregnant woman, whose stomach was ripped open  by the over 50 rampaging herdsmen, who invaded their community and  killed  a seminarian, Lazarus Nwafor. Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the invasion of the village by the herdsmen as the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Senator Gilbert Nnaji and Enugu State Councillors Forum described the incident as unwarranted and called on the state government to protect the people of the state. CLO flays killings The Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, in a statement, yesterday, while condemning  the brazen murder and killing of innocent citizens in different parts of the South East region by herdsmen, described it as callous. Mr Aloysius Attah, Chairman, CLO, South East Zone in a statement, yesterday, said: “The latest incident that happened last Thursday  when Ndigbo were yet to get over the shock of the Nimbo and Uzo Uwani killings in this same manner is callous, provocative, wicked, premeditated and smacks of a clear intent to continue decimating a particular ethnic group even in their own fatherland. Attah urged  the governor of Enugu State to  immediately summon all the traditional rulers and President General of all the communities in the state to ascertain the actual number of communities harboring
the herdsmen in any form. He said further: “This is pure act of barbarism and terrorism against the people while the actors are emboldened to carry on in their ignoble role because we were made to understand that some people own the country while others are second class citizens. “We had noted that beside the killings at Nimbo, in Enugu State, other cases have been reported at various parts of the South East, including  Amaoha in Ikwuano Local Government of Abia State, where a herdsman was alleged to have pulled a rifle aimed at killing the traditional ruler of the community and some of his subjects. “While we commend the Enugu State governor, Mr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callistus Onaga, for their prompt and timely visits to the scene of the latest incident and their interface with the people of the area to douse tension, we dare say that the situation has turned desperate and also needs desperate solution. Senator Nnaji Meanwhile, Senator Gilbert Nnaji,  representing Enugu East Senatorial District, said he was particularly saddened that the killing by the suspected cattle rearers happened again in Enugu, and this time, in his senatorial constituency, just a few months after the gruesome invasion and attack on Nimbo, another community in Enugu North Senatorial Zone. Nnaji appealed to the leaders and people of Ndiagu Attakwu in Akegbe-Ugwu community  not to take laws into their hands by contemplating reprisal action against the Fulani herdsmen anywhere in the state until investigations were  concluded. He, however,  called on the Federal Government to be more proactive in stepping up a “water tight security” in Enugu State and all other vulnerable communities in the various states of the country where the activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen are well pronounced. The lawmaker also urged the owners of the cattle herds to urgently adopt a known practice in the North-Western states like Sokoto and others, where grazing cattles are gagged with strong woven raffia pouch before being allowed to graze through farm lands. Relatedly, the Enugu State Councillors Forum,ESCF, has demanded the immediate ban on any form of grazing throughout the perimeters of the state. The former councillors also vowed as chief security officers in the 260 wards in the state,to put its foots on the ground to forestall a recurrence  of the dastardly act in any part of the state.

Umar-Abubakar said this in Zaria, Kaduna State. He said that Nigeria produced only three per cent of wheat it consumed, while the remaining 97 per cent was being imported. Umar-Abubakar said the country had the capacity to produce enough quantity of wheat needed for local processing and consumption. “We have the capacity to produce enough wheat not only for our consumption, but also for export. Remember, we eat many products made from wheat every day. You can imagine what will happen if Nigerian farmers today decided to go on strike, can the oil money buy all the food we need in this country? Agriculture contributes 24 per cent of GDP, while oil contributes only seven per cent,” he said. Umar-Abubakar said that there was no formidable policy to accelerate agricultural development in the country and pleaded with government to stop paying lip service to it. He called for collaboration with members of the press to publicise activities of the institute, especially research findings not only for the benefit of farmers, but the nation at large.

Villagers Bombed Police Station In Anambra, Killed Guard – CP

THE land dispute between Abagana in Njikoka local government area of Anambra State and Ukpo in Dunukofia local government area, reached the climax last week when hundreds of youths, suspected to be from Abagana, attacked a police post located on the border between the two communities. The attack claimed the life of one of the security men guarding the large expand of land, while the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, for Dunukofia and three other policemen sustained various degrees of injury.

The area where the incident took place was like a war zone when Sunday Vanguard visited the place as two patrol vans belonging to the police and five buildings under construction were destroyed with explosives suspected to be dynamites.

Several dangerous weapons, including live ammunition, three AK47 rifles and dynamite, were said to have been recovered from suspects arrested in connection with the attack by the police.

It was gathered that two prominent indigenes of Abagana and Ukpo respectively were behind the struggle for the land and that, at the peak of the dispute, the land allocated to the police to build a post to serve the area. Sunday Vanguard learnt that the decision to allocate the land to the police was in the overriding public interest as it was thought that it would help to end the dispute.

What was said to have angered Abagana people was the building of a gate, with bold inscription, “Welcome to Ukpo”, by an Ukpo billionaire at a place they considered to be their territory. An indigene of the town said that, as if that was not enough, a police security post was mounted at the place, while construction work was taking place on the massive disputed land.

On their part, Ukpo people said the land belongs to them, adding that they donated it to the Federal Government for the building of the police post and wondered why a group of people should have the audacity to destroy government property.

The policemen, who were on duty when the incident happened, said they were overwhelmed by the crowd, adding that a large number of people would have been killed if the police had decided to challenge them.

Anambra State new commissioner of police, Mr. Sam Okaula, said the command had arrested 23 persons in connection with the incident, adding, however, that investigation into the matter was continuing.

Okaula said those involved in the dastardly act had murdered sleep and vowed that they would never go free. The CP said: “Hoodlums, numbering over 200, from Abagana and fully armed with explosives and other dangerous weapons, invaded Ukpo and descended on a police post, while engaging in heavy firing. They overwhelmed the four policemen on duty and instantly shot and killed the security guard, Emmanuel Okafor.

“The assailants went further to bomb the police post and ten-room self-contained police barracks, after burning two police vehicles.

“The DPO Ukpo, who led a patrol team to the scene, was overwhelmed and shot. Three other policemen received various degrees of bullet wounds from the assailants. The DPO and the policemen are presently on admission in hospital.

“I led a team to the scene and, based on intelligence report, arrested ten of the assailants in Abagana. Detectives further arrested eleven other suspects from their various hideouts. It is to be noted that a team of Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) identified and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, and recovered another one at the scene. “Also, four pump action guns, with two live cartridges, three AK 47 rifles, three locally made pistols, cutlasses and other arms were recovered.

“It could be seen from the magnitude of this unwarranted attack that the perpetrators obviously embarked on what appears to be like an act of terrorism. Investigation is currently in top gear and those found culpable will definitely face the full wrath of the law. Those arrested have also made very useful statements to the police.”

The CP said that prior to the attack, a meeting was held in an hotel belonging to a prominent indigene of Abagana where the dastardly plan of attack was allegedly hatched. However, while the 23 persons arrested in connection with the incident were being paraded at the police headquarters in Awka, some of the denied being among those behind the mayhem.

One of the suspects, who is in his late 20s, said he was in his house close to the area when the police came and arrested him. “I am innocent. I work somewhere else and I was getting ready to go to work when the police came and dragged me into their vehicle and took me to the station,” he said amid sobs.

In the meantime, people passing through Abagana -Ukpo road since the incident have had ugly stories to tell as they claim security operatives harass them to the point of asking them to UnCloth to be searched. “I don’t know why our big men should cause us this problem at this time,” one of them said.

NDLEA investigates the arrest of 3 pilgrims in Saudi Arabia over alleged drug trafficking

Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) has ordered investigation into the arrest of three Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia in connection with substances suspected to be cocaine.

Abdallah who expressed disappointment over the unfortunate incident constituted a panel of inquiry headed by the Director of Operations and General Investigation, Mr. Olugbenga Mabo to immediately investigate the incident adding that the Agency will address the situation with every sense of seriousness and urgency. The Agency had also deployed more investigators to all the screening camps nationwide. In a press release yesterday, August 26th, the NDLEA boss said,

"Narcotic smuggling is criminal and the involvement of pilgrims is utterly reprehensible. This is unfortunate and we are working very hard to get to the root of it. The Agency is handling this case with every sense of seriousness and urgency because this action has negatively affected the image of Nigeria. We have also taken measures to intensify the on-going screening of pilgrims who are yet to depart to Saudi Arabia to prevent a re-occurrence of the sad incident".

Abdallah assured members of the public that the NDLEA will get to the root of the incident. The terms of reference for the panel of inquiry include to ascertain the circumstances behind the non-detection of the pilgrims before takeoff, identification of possible sponsors and source of drug supply as well as make recommendations on effective screening of pilgrims.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA boss also called on pilgrims to uphold the principle of probity, patriotism and eschew any act capable of bringing the image of the country to disrepute. Abdallah vowed to take necessary steps aimed at bringing any person or group of persons involved in the criminal act to justice.

Millions out of job: Unemployment at ‘boiling up’

Today,  one of the major threats to Nigeria’s economic and social stability is the army of unemployed  and underemployed  people, especially youths,  roaming  its  cities and villages.  Such  persons, no doubt,  constitute huge security risk to the  society,  as they are willing tools for  mischief-makers  and of great concern as indeed it can be likened to a volcano on the verge eruption.
Already, the impact of high unemployment rate  is manifest  in the  upsurge  of  various forms of criminal activities across the country from petty stealing to  armed robbery, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism,  illegal  oil bunkering, and even the extreme cases of  insurgency. All of these have their direct or indirect roots in the employment crisis because as the  local  saying goes, ‘an idle hand is the devil’s workshop’. A drive through the nooks and crannies of  most Nigerian cities, towns and even villages reveals a startling  confirmation of  how millions of able-bodied youths roam the streets idling away the productive  period  of their lives.  Nigeria’s employment crisis has been further aggravated by the activities of  insurgents in the North-Eastern  where the Boko Haram terrorist group has sacked millions of residents from their homes, jobs and other  gainful  activities. Similarly, activities of militants in the Niger Delta  have also forced many oil companies to  either scale down operations,  relocate or close shop  leading  to mass retrenchment of workers.  The same  has been recorded in the manufacturing and banking sectors thereby further aggravating an already bad situation.  Even the government’s  policy of Treasury Single Account, TSA, has  been said to have further dialled up unemployment level with a record of over 5,000 job losses in the financial sector. The  National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)   reported that  the national  unemployment rate  increased to 12.1percent in the  first quarter of 2016 from 10.4percent in the last quarter of 2015 while underemployment rate  grew to 19.1percent in the  first quarter of 2016 from 18.7percent in the last quarter of 2015. Just recently,  the President of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria,  ASCSN, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, whilst   speaking at the body’s National Delegates Conference, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, lamented the rising unemployment rate in Nigeria and its dangers to national development. Kaigama, who is also the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, said: “We believe that Nigeria is presently at a boiling point as far as the rate of joblessness is concerned and urgent measures need to be taken to arrest this ugly trend”.    He corroborated  the reality of the impact of the situation to the sanctity of the nation’s socio-economic  being and called for the  government to set out goals  for  its employment creation agenda alongside economic overhaul of the country for  more competitiveness, investment attraction  and access to finance  amongst others.  The hues, cries and lamentation is endless and with the  panacea to the unemployment crisis seeming inexhaustible, how then  can Nigeria overcome its unemployment crisis  recognizing the fact that no  country in the world   has   totally resolved  its unemployment problem.  The best  is to keep it within the lower single digit figures  by creating an economy that offers employment opportunities. Research The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, Nigeria  (CIPM Nigeria),  as the  regulatory body for human resource management practice  in the country,  recently conducted a research titled “Management of National Unemployment Challenges in Nigeria” in a bid to further understand  and proffer solutions to  unemployment  situation  in the country.  Expectedly, the research report  gives  clear pointers to the  prevailing  causes of the  current situation and solutions to it. According to the report,  the causes are quite a number, the top being inconsisted government policy  rated an average of 4.56 on a scale of 5. The report called   for a critical analysis of the  applicability and sustainability of public policies before  and whilstformulation as it seems  the nation has a history of  sustainable  public policy  application  challenge. Another causes of the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria, according to the report, is poor political governance and  policy direction. This is said to  have strongly tied with  harsh  operating business  environment which factually informs the short-lived  nature of businesses  and  render  employees jobless. The report  highlights  the lack of  stakeholder (public &private sector)  ownable  national employment policy with an average rating of 4.23 on a scale of 5.  According to the report, this may not be totally inseparable from inconsistent government policy.  Indeed,  should  all  parties jointly own an actionable  national employment policy, there would  be strongly harnessed ideologies and a united front  with all parties  singing  from the same page. Panacea The panacea to the unemployment crisis is  inexhaustible. Besides the  issues and causes  as highlighted by  CIPM  Nigeria  through the research report, some of thefollowing suggestions  could also  contribute to minimising the current level  of unemployment to avert possible human and economic crisis: Ease of Doing Business: Consideration must be given to  creating  conducive environment  for  a thriving  private sector  to enable job creation owing to the obvious fact the  government alone  can not  be burdened with such responsibility especially in the face  of its rapidly  shrinking capacity for such.  The provision of critical infrastructure  such as good road network, stable power supply and security of lives and properties endears thriving  business just  as  progressive taxation policy and where necessary,  encourages investment and  investors. One sector that has the capacity to create mass employment is the agricultural sector.  As such  massive investment in agriculture is needed to lure youths to that sector for the production of food and raw materials needed for industrial survival and growth. One  can recall with nostalgia the Groundnut pyramid, Cotton, Millet from the North, Cocoa from the West,  Palm  oil and Palm produces from the South-East and South-South before the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantity. These farm produces provided the needed raw materials for most of the nation’s industrial sector. The textile industry alone employed over 500,000 direct jobs before 1997.  This can be repeated  perhaps with the government’s currently launched  initiative “Green  Alternate” aimed at providing a roadmap for the nation’s agricultural sector.  Speaking at the  launch  recently held in Abuja, Mr. Audu Ogbeh, Honourable Minister of agriculture  stated that “100,000 extension workers will be recruited for the sector” an encouraging statistics in spinning off more opportunities for job creation. Social dialogue The importance of social dialogue amongst  government, private sector employers,  relevant professional bodies  and union leaders at all levels, from policy design to implementation and the measurement of results should be a matter of state policy. Workers and employers’ organisations should actively participate in social dialogue at the enterprise, sectoral and national levels to assess opportunities and resolve challenges posed. Also, there should be dialogue and continuous dialogue among government, employers and administrators of the nation’s institutions of higher learning to ensure that products of such institutions match the needs of employers. In other words, the dialogue should be centred on ensuring that graduates of the nation’s tertiary institutions have the right skills required by employers of labour so that the issue of employability is drastically minimised if  not completely  eradicated.  This should perhaps start with the process of assessing and redesigning the curricula of the nation’s higher institutions of  learning. Keen consideration for employment impacting policy formulation  should be paramount. All socio-economic  policies should not only be job- friendly, but also  job creation oriented. That is, every economic action and reaction of government should have  creating  sustainable jobs as a focal point.  The  success  metrics  of  any  action,  should be  determined  by the number of sustainable jobs  created. For example, the moves  to reconstruct the north eastern part of Nigeria’s  success of the reconstruction  efforts  should be determined by the number of sustainable jobs created at the end of the day. It should not just be aimed at returning displaced persons back to their homes, but should ensure that displaced farmers, fishermen, factory workers and others return to their normal lives and those who hitherto were not engaged in productive activities are meaningfully engaged. One of the major problems of the last administration’s amnesty programme was its failure to be job creation centred. If it were sustainable job creation centred, the ex-militants would have been seamlessly integrated into the society as fully employed boys and girls instead of depending on  an unsustainable trend of  monthly allowance. The urgent call for the  support  of Small  and Medium scale  Enterprises and Businesses  becomes also imperative for review  because viable SMEs are the greatest impetus to jobs creation as  recorded  in the Asian tigers where cottage industries have continued to play major roles in the growth of their economies. This  support can be in form of  start up funds or capital needs  to drive their businesses. There should be social protection to improve resilience and safeguard SMEs against the impact of socio-economic and even environmental shocks. Social policy measures should be integrated into national responses to socio-economic and environmental changes. Employment-guarantee schemes such as bailouts can help in many ways such as  job  creation and even sustaining existing jobs. This can help employers and workers cope with changing labour market demands. It could also aid workers to either retool, or acquire the type of skills needed to improve the chances to keep or get new jobs. Agencies like the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, Industrial Training Fund, ITF, should be well funded and ensured that they are not open to political manipulation. Ad hoc policies such as the now rested Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, for empowering political loyalists should be discouraged. Local content Above, all efforts should be put in place to revise the current trend where almost everything including toothpick is imported. There should be a law forcing public officials at the three tiers of government to patronise locally made goods at all public functions and establishments, with severe sanctions for contravention of such a law. In other words, local manufacturing should be the priority of the government. Local content law should be applicable in all sectors of the economy to arrest the current trend just as the  law on expatriates’ quota should be enforced  to curb the situation where foreigners have taken  over jobs  ideally  meant for Nigerians. Finally, importation of finished goods, from petroleum products, clothes, consumables and so on should be discouraged. What unrestricted and unregulated importation does is to export jobs to the country of importation and import unemployment to the importing. One typical example in this regard is the continued exportation of the nation’s crude oil and the  near 100percent importation of refined petroleum products. A locally driven petroleum sector with value addition that utilises all the by-products of crude oil is a mega employer of labour. With the aforementioned,  it only becomes clearer that the  failure to tame  the upsurge in unemployment no doubt  portends  huge  danger  to  our social and economic well survival hence all hands must be on deck to address the issue and avert a crisis.  This for sure must account for CIPM’s recent commitment and  renewed vigour  at  various levels of  stakeholder engagement  for  adopting well grounded and rounded recommendations into  policy adoption in line with the intended agenda of the current administration  on  job creation  and  employment.

Polish Olympian sells Rio silver medal to help 3-year-old boy with eye cancer

Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski sold the silver medal he won at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to help pay for the medication of a 3-year-old boy suffering from eye cancer.
Malachowski wrote, according to Facebook's translation: "In Rio I fought for gold," "Today, I appeal to everyone -- let's fight together about something that is even more precious. The health of this fantastic boy."
According to Malachowski, the procedure to treat the rare form of cancer isn't available in Poland; it is offered only in New York.

Malachowski said on Facebook that siblings Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, who are among the richest Poles, "declared the intention to buy my silver medal," which he put up for auction to help pay for treatment of the boy, Olek, who is suffering from retinoblastoma.

Malachowski did not reveal the amount he raised by selling his medal on Friday, but said the target, which was almost $130,000, has been met.
"My silver medal is worth much more today than it was a week ago," Malachowski said.

Death of Nigerian social worker at a sex party in the UK ruled as accident

The death of 35-year-old Nigerian social worker who died at a James Bond-themed swingers party after he told his friend he was attending an evening church service has been ruled as an accident on Thursday, August 25th, 2016 at Herts Coroner's Court. Edmund Echukwu, who was born in Nigeria and lived at Springwood Crescent in Edgware, attended the swingers party at Littlecroft on Theobald Street in Radlett but later died after he was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool in the early hours of March 28 2015.
The father of three told an organiser he had attended before but it was actually his first time. Richard Stanley and Janet Harrison, who own Radlett Parties, organise a monthly party at their home and Mr Echukwu had called on the Thursday (March 26) beforehand to enquire about attending.

In evidence submitted to the inquest at Herts Coroner’s Court, Janet Harrison said: "He said he wanted to make new friends and try new things. He sounded lonely and I felt a little sorry for him."

The inquest heard that Mr Echukwu was one of the later party guests to arrive and met another guest, known only to the court as Rachael, on the dance floor. When giving evidence, Rachael told the court that she thought he did not appear drunk and was very polite.

The pair then went to Rachael’s car to collect her towel and entered the pool together; Rachael with two floats as she could not swim ‘very well’. It was when they entered the deep part of the swimming pool that Mr Echukwu suddenly ‘grabbed’ her neck and she ‘wriggled’ away and went to the side of the pool.
"He was by my side and this part of the pool is very deep. I couldn't touch the bottom. He just grabbed my neck and pulled me under the water. I had to push him away because I feared he would drown me and pull me under."
The court heard that herself and two other men at the scene saw Mr Echukwu wave his hands above the water and soon became concerned. She told the court that another party-goer said :
"He’s been under way too long."

The two men ran to get someone to help rescue Mr Echukwu and several minutes later Richard Stanley arrived and dived into the pool.

In his evidence submitted to the court, Mr Stanley said:
'I saw a black man lying on the bottom of the pool."
CPR was performed on Mr Echukwu by various guests and an ambulance was called. Mr Echukwu was taken to Watford General and pronounced dead at 1.38am. There was a dispute as to whether Mr Echukwu could swim as he told Rachael he had been swimming with his two-year-old son recently, but his estranged partner, and mother of his two other children, told the police that he did not.

His friend, Anthony Okonkuwo, also submitted evidence which described how he knew Mr Echukwu and the events leading up to his death. In the statement he said that Mr Echukwu had seemed ‘stressed’ due to his immigration status and they had watched a football match together that day. Mr Echukwu then told him he was going to attend an evening mass at their church.

In evidence Det Con Robert Wood said that a number of the guests left the scene and many of those who remained gave false contact information.

A post-mortem found that the alcohol in his system was only slightly above the drink-driving limit at 81mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Senior coroner Geoffrey Sullivan said that he could not be sure that Mr Echukwu could not swim and recorded a verdict of accidental death, giving the cause of death as immersion and minor alcohol intoxication. The coroner added:
"It was the result of a sad accident. It was the result of an unfortunate accident. He appeared to be playing around in the pool but went under the water and did not re-surface."

51-year-old Woman Caught With Heroin At Lagos Airport

51-year-old Ogun State woman nabbed with 180 grammes of heroin

Akinyemi Monsurat Olajumoke, who hails from Ogun State, was nabbed with four parcels of heroin, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, during inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopia Airlines flight from Entebbe, Uganda.

Narrating how she got involved in the act of drug pushing, 51-year-old Olajumoke said:
"I am a trader. I used to buy female clothes from India for sale. However, due to family problems and the economic situation, my capital is getting smaller and I wanted to expand my business. I was introduced into drug trafficking by a friend who invited me to Uganda.

"I invested my $3,000 into the deal in expectation of over 100%. I am sad that things did not go as planned. When the drug was discovered at the airport, I felt as if it was all over for me."

5 ISIS child executioners shoot 5 Kurd prisoners each in the head in Syria

A chilling new video from ISIS shows a British boy and four other young children executing prisoners in cold blood in Syria. The grotesque nine-minute video was supposedly recorded recently in the ISIS capital of Raqqa, in Syria. The video shows five boys - believed to be from Britain, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia and Uzbekistan, holding handguns and wearing the desert camouflage.
One of the boys screamed something in Arabic and slapped one of the terrified captives who was kneeling down in front of him, on his shaved head before they raised their guns and killed the five men, 'atheist' Kurdish fighters who were captured during a battle.

According to The Sun, the British boy was identified only as Abu Abdullah al-Britani. He is white, blue-eyed and about 12 years old.

Abu means 'Son of' in Arabic, which suggests the boy may be the son of Abdullah al-Britani, a young British jihadist who got married in Syria and was killed in a drone strike.

The Times reports that one of the boys said in Arabic:

'No one can save the Kurds even with the support of America, France, Britain, Germany, the devils in hell.' He then calls for the takbir and the other boys shout in unison - Allahu Akbar (God is Great) before raising their pistols to the sky and shooting the prisoners. Their bodies are later shown with bullet wounds to their heads.

The age of criminal responsibility in Britain is 10 years, so if the boy is captured and sent back to Britain to face justice he could be prosecuted for murder.

Am done with Nigeria- says Saisia

*Reveals what they did to his wife while he was away for the Olympics *Recalls the efforts of President Buhari through Osibanjo, Lai ` Mohammed, Adeosun *Wants money meant for the failed chartered flight to be accounted for Coach of the National U-23 team, Samson Siasia is certainly not new to  Nigerian football. His latest foray where he led the team to win Nigeria’s only medal at the just concluded Rio 2016 Olympic Games was not the first time the former Super Eagles striker will be on the saddle. Before now he had coached the same team to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where he won the silver medal after another silver medal in Under 20 World Cup in Holland. In this last assignment for the Rio Olympics, the sports minister Solomon Dalung called him names for taking the team to Atlanta for preparation. Before then the same minister publicly condemned him for dropping some players who played in the African Championship in Senegal. The minister wanted all those who played in Senegal to be in Rio their fitness level or injuries notwithstanding. The Nigeria Football Federation owed him salaries running up to five months. He never got the support he needed from the ministry to the federation. In this interview with Correspondent Jude Opara, Siasia speaks on his future in Nigeria and many more. Excerpts. Welcome from Rio Olympics. How does it feel?
It feels good because the end justifies the means. We wanted the gold but     we are still happy with the bronze because it made Nigerians happy. The minister accused you of child trafficking for taking the team to Atlanta without his knowledge or consent. How can I take a national team out of the country without their knowledge of the NFF and the Sports Ministry? I really don’t know were that was coming from.We had the plan to travel from Atlanta to Brazil on the 29th of July. But the agent who was handling that did not get us the chartered flight or pay for our tickets, but nothing actually happened and that was when I, on my own, decided to contact an agent, Greg. But the guy said he would not do anything until he saw that the money was paid into his account. After three days, the guy said he was no longer interested and even told other operators not to deal with us that we were not a serious people.Back to the camp in Atlanta. How was it?The first 10 days was like a hell because we had to struggle to pay for hotel accommodation and feeding because the person, Bunmi, who opted to assist us did not get the necessary support he expected. But after the fist 10 days the Ministry came through the NFF and paid for our bills. But we were stranded in Atlanta because the money they said they paid to one Poopola for us to travel never came and nobody has heard anything about it. What was your level of communication with the both the NFF and the Ministry while in Atlanta? No, nobody called me from the ministry. The Minister was dealing with Mikel may be because he was the captain of the Olympic team. But when we had the plane issue, the Vice President called and I spoke with him like two times, the Finance Minister called and indeed the first person to call was the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed. I must say he did a nice job to see how to solve our problem because I think the President heard about our plight and instructed that they should find a way to solver the problem. They were, I believe, embarrassed because the issue was even on CNN every time. However, the chartered flight thing never worked out because the guy they were discussing with called me and we tried to see how to arrange the fight but there was no money sent to him and so it didn’t work out too. So the option we had was to arrive Rio the very day we were to play and that could have resulted in a walk-over of our team. We had a chartered 36-seater flight that was to take us to arrive Rio by 2 o’clock while our game was at 9 o’clock. But the players were afraid of that flight because it was very small and when we got to the airport, Delta called thought the same Bunmi guy. In fact, they were supposed to partner with Delta but I don’t know what happened. When they heard of our plight they called him to offer a big plane to fly us the next day so as to arrive five hours before the match. Indeed we were already at the airport to fly that small plane which was paid for by a friend of mine, but when the players heard that Delta was coming, they insisted that we should watt for it. In fact they were almost dying out of fear. When I called Mikel to tell him about the development, he said ‘I beg, please let us wait for tomorrow for the bigger plane which is safer and better’. All the players were happy and excited that we were not going to fly that small plane and perhaps that is the reason they came out to play the way they did with all their mind. Indeed Delta did a great job. Even when the CBN 46 came to the hotel, we refused to tell them about our problems because it was about Nigeria, even though every thing was already in the public domain. Talking to them would not have changed anything. Now Delta said the cost of flying us was about $250,000 dollars but that they were not charging us. They said if we had it the money could be paid to any charity organization of mine or Mikel but we have not seen anything and that appears like another fraud. We took pictures with Delta to promote them and thank them for their support. I am telling you what actually happened. We are still waiting to see where the money that was meant for us to fly to Brazil has gone to. Nobody has said anything. The federal government sent the money to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the NOC said they sent the money to the airline in Florida which up till now they have not received anything, even the airline is planning to sue them for breach of contract because they were supposed to pay some money to them even if they were to cancel the arrangement. That is even another issue. We don’t even know how they are going to settle that. The Minister categorically said he never knew where you were and that you were engaging in human trafficking, is that true? (Laughs) I don’t know what he was talking about. When I first heard about human trafficking and such stuff, I was angry because the Minister knew that we were going to Atlanta. If not that they stole my phone, I would have shown to you his text message to me before we travelled. That day the U-20 defeated us 3-2 in our last warm-up match, the Minister sent me a text that I should come so that we can chat but when I went they said he went to the Villa. He knew exactly what was going on because there was no way he would not know because the Olympic team is statutorily under his control, it is his baby and that has been the way it is. So I don’t understand why he should say I was engaging in child trafficking. How did you feel about that statement? As I said before I felt very bad but later I didn’t want it to bother me because I know it is not true and I had other more important things to worry about than such comments. Would you say that yours trip to Atlanta has been justified? Yes because they say that the end justifies the means and if not for that it would have been very annoying because after working very hard for two years without anything to show for it would have been disastrous. It would have been a waste of time and effort. I am happy because in spite of all that we went through both here at home and in Atlanta, this is the only team that won a medal for the country. It felt so good when the Nigerian team was called alongside the Brazilian and German national teams with the Nigerian flag hoisted there, that is what we were talking about, putting Nigeria where so many other countries didn’t have the chance to be and that is why I say that these boys need to be commended for what they did. This is something that money cannot even buy. What did you really play for?We didn’t play for money and in fact there was even no money to play for. So what I told the boys was to ensure they played for their country and for their pride and future so that they could get better clubs because that is the only thing to point to motivate them, given our situation. What was it like in camp? We were on and off the camp for two years with only two training jerseys. You know everything was just wrong from the beginning. The only good thing from this camp is the fact that the boys really came out to play and Mikel showed character and leadership among the younger boys. We worked together to ensure that we got something out of them. It appears that the team has been disbanded because there was no official reception and send forth of the team, so what is the next thing for Samson Siasia? Personally, I was not really surprised that they did not welcome us because most of them were actually waiting and praying for us to fail but we disappointed them by winning that medal. But most sports loving Nigerians who were not on the saddle came out on their own and they were the ones that really appreciated what we did. Look at this way, if things were done properly, they should have at least informed the Lagos State government that the Olympic team was arriving so that they could welcome us on behalf of the government but nobody told them anything. There was no connection from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) or the Ministry of Sports. They knew we were coming. It was only one staff of the ministry that was sent to take us to hotel. What is your next step with the national team?My next step is that I am done with Nigeria for now. You can’t keep going to a place where they don’t appreciate you. It does not worth it. Sometimes it is not about the money but the approach. They seem not to appreciate the sacrifices. I know how much I have sacrificed since the team began camping two years ago. How can you keep going to people who don’t appreciate you? It does not make sense, so I am done for now. I have to go somewhere else where they will appreciate what I have done and what I can do and pay me the respect that I deserve. But many Nigerians out there still appreciate you. I know and that is why I keep coming to do the dirty jobs for them because of my numerous fans out there but I can’t just continue because those fans are not the policy makers. How can you keep toiling for five months without even your salary? Nothing has changed in the last two years. It has been from bad to worse, so we must sit down and do something about the structure of Nigerian football and by extension sports in general. It doesn’t worth it to work with the people running sports now in Nigeria. From the Federation to the sports ministry. They don’t have it and will not give what they don’t have. It feels bad.It is like you already have somewhere in mind. No, I don’t have any place in mind. I just have to go an d rest for two months and while I am resting, I will not be the one looking for where to go. There are people who will be doing that. But for me I am done with Nigeria until things change. Imagine any time they have a problem, they will call on me to come and help but they will use me and later dump me. I have not started any team of the Super Eagles from the beginning, not even one time. I want to thank them very very much. Even before I returned from the Olympics, the only car they gave me, they took it away from my wife. That is just awesome. That is not how to treat someone who was out there seeking glory for the nation. Let them eat their national team. Are you saying you will never come to work for Nigeria again? No not now, I will not change my mind when the same people are there doing the same thing over and over again. If the right people come on board tomorrow then I may reconsider my position because I am also a Nigerian but truly, I will no longer work with these people. We are out of the AFCON, U-20 and U-17 teams have all crashed out, what hope do we have to qualify for the 2018 World Cup? I wish the country well, but before we talk of qualifying we must do the right thing. When we don’t do the right thing and still want to qualify, then it does not work that way. Yes we pray, but other countries also pray and God is a fair God and I believe God will most likely answer the prayer of the person who has worked and prayed. To succeed you must plan and if you don’t plan in any human endeavour, you have planed to fail. But they have hired a new Coach and that is the first step towards succeeding Well they have hired a coach, I wish them well but what time does he have to even know the players he intends to work with? I sincerely pray that he qualifies us for the World Cup. But there is this talk out there that the reason they usually go for foreign coaches is because you Nigerian coaches always collect money to invite players to camp or collect money from players. That is cheep blackmail. No coach who knows his onion will take money and take people who will not assist him to deliver in a championship. We have seen players like Kelechi Iheanacho graduate from the cadet team. If they were taking money how could you discover such good players who are doing well outside? Probably, they usually run for foreign coaches because those are the ones that may give them cuts from their salary, it is a cheep propaganda to destroy Nigerian coaches. If they want to go for the foreign coaches, let them just do that. Some of them that came before what happened to them? They ran away but we are here grounded because this is our country. We want to do everything to see her succeed. Even good or bad, we will return here because it is our country, that’s it. If they think we are taking money to recruit these players, what money do these players even have to give to any coach? Mention one of them. Most of them are from poor families. But their agents do payIf the agents succeed in bribing any coach to take a player who is not good enough, then that coach does not know what he is doing and he is not worthy to be called a coach because there is no amount of money that will make a bad player to become a good player. How much can a coach get out of these players and their agents? Again it is two folds, the only reason that a coach may accept to take money is when they don’t pay him for months, and he has pressing problems, even as I insist it is not a good reason. That brings us to the issue of corruption. If you are working and they don’t pay you, that is also corruption on their part. So they are the architect of all these problems and if they have seen one coach that has taken money, have they confronted him with the player he was said to have collected money from? If they have the fact let them challenge the coach that this player said you took money or that you didn’t play him because he didn’t pay you. If you take such money, you are putting yourself in a lot of problem because if the player is not good he will affect your team and game plan, also if you don’t play him he will talk because he has proof that you took money from him. To me I will never take money to play any player.
